Walkable / Car-Independent Town – Southwest US

My dream is to build a walkable, bike-friendly town of a few thousand in the Southwest United States. With farms and/or ranches immediately outside the town center, and development that prioritizes walking and cycling over driving. The type of architecture in place would be earth-friendly materials adobe & cob with others added over time. Although the Southwest is a desert there are ways for building for this environment (google desert-urbanism, Dubai Old Quarter, Shibam, Yemen)

I’m looking for people who want sustainable and affordable living with a sort of pioneer spirit. From agricultural types to tradesmen, to artists to cooks and all sorts of backgrounds. As for religious and political affiliations as long as you are not extremist I don’t mind. Diversity is our strength. This place would be located in a rural area near a town for resources once we’re first starting. Ultimately it comes down to homes that need less AC and heaters and a city that needs less driving. The less we are dependent on such fragile technologies the more resilient our community is

Yes I don’t expect this to get off the ground soon. It will be a lengthy process but the more people on board the faster this ship can sail off
