Cohousing Values and Participation:
We formed a multigenerational community, with like-minded owners who participate in governance and events that foster community and a sense of belonging. We have a community organic garden, courtyard, and play area for kids. Our common house has a deck overlooking the courtyard where we have meals, weather permitting, otherwise eating in the community dining room. Our common house has two guest bedrooms, two bathrooms, a dining room/kitchen, living room/den, and kid’s playroom. We have a garage for bicycles and shared tools.
Our community is designed, owned and managed by the community. We rehabilitated our buildings and designed our community at our inception in 2007, but continue to evolve. We meet every other month for a business meeting where we make decisions about policies, repairs, budgets, etc. On the alternate months, we meet for community connection meetings where we learn and develop skills for communication, conflict resolution, values discussions, or just have fun together.
Everyone works on a committee (finance, maintenance or facilitation) and these committees work for the community. We also belong to an “affinity group” – garden, landscape or common house. Usually we each work about an hour per week for each of our groups. We have work parties quarterly for upkeep and maintenance of the property.
We meet for meals once or twice a week and try to accommodate dietary needs of all members. We each are part of a cooking team once a month. Every year we have a retreat for deeper connecting, we have a summer and winter party, and other activities and celebrations which vary year to year.
When members can’t participate as expected, they find different ways of contributing and we are open-minded to that. However, we all participate and contribute to the community and enjoy knowing and connecting with each other. In our community, it’s up to the individual how much they socialize, as people have different preferences and time availability. There are ways of contributing individually, or working in a group.
Tenancy in Common (TIC)
Because of limitations of our finances and roadblocks to development in our local area at our founding, we chose to develop a pre-existing townhouse complex that had a pre-existing design conducive to community connection and including a common house. We own the property together in a TIC where we each own a percentage of the property. We have individual loans, but only certain banks make these loans. You can find out more about that as you proceed if you have visited the home and our community.
