Tired of city living? How about living in a country cabin at Zephyr Creek Crossing – an intentional community conveniently located near the crossroads of Highways KY 1295 and KY-595 near Lexington, KY. We are accepting applications for residency of our ground floor, furnished/unfurnished duplex unit (950 sq feet) which includes a private bedroom and bath, kitchen and great room. Monthly residency starts at $750 which also includes utilities, cable tv and internet.
This beautiful Kentucky style cabin offers all the benefits of country living but is conveniently located only ten miles from Eastern Kentucky University and Berea College or 40 minutes from Lexington. A covered patio overlooks a unique rock lined creek – the perfect place for morning coffee, while being entertained by hummingbirds out for their morning nectar run. Or take a meditation walk around the secluded property, where you are surrounded by natural beauty, trees, flowers and organic vegetable gardens and a bubbling creek. Our resident family dogs – Sophie and Valentine might even get you to throw them a few balls! .
Zephyr Creek Crossing is a little different kind of a living situation, maybe even ideal in this crazy time of covid and social distancing. It’s not just an “apartment” – it is an “intentional” community which started in 2008. You rent your own private duplex – but we are also looking for resident(s) max 2 who share our view of neighborliness and ecology and want to live in an active neighborhood focused on sustainability, organic farming, ecological living – including recycling and composting, lowering our electricity and water use, and working for the common good and friendship. In addition to your monthly fees, residents are asked to contribute four hours a month to the development of the community. This can be fulfilled in various ways – including recycling, gardening, mowing, assisting with the website, carpentry, etc. You pick the way. Everyone’s talents and needs vary – so we try to capitalize on everyone’s talent. Regular Meals are not included due to our small size, but we try to stop and say hi, or share a cup of coffee and/or meal together frequently – and chat story a few minutes while respecting everyone’s privacy.
A laundry room is located nearby in the multi-purpose building. We have a clothes dryer – but you are also welcome to hang your clothes to dry if desired. A large arts and crafts room is equipped with some work out equipment and tools which are also shared with the community. Some storage may be available. Utilities – electricity, water, forced air heating and air conditioning, cable tv, septic and trash are included in the rent as well as DSL WIFI. (super fast WIFI is still not available here. Verizon phones work best. A $100 cleaning fee deposit is required.
ZCC is also an organic truck farm – and we have sold our vegetables and strawberries at the Berea Farm Market in times past. We aren’t selling this year, but we still have a big garden and are growing a wide diversity of vegetables, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, peaches and apples. If desired, residents are welcome to participate in the seasonal gardening which is finishing up for this year within the next month. Additional farming kind of things are welcomed if so desired..
Residents should have a stable income stream and a good rental history. A vehicle is a must as there is no public transportation nearby. However, we also share rides to town and shopping runs. We are not large enough to provide regular income opportunities to residents. However, if you have carpentry or special skills it is possible that we might be able to offset some of your rent occasionally especially while we are constructing a new cabin onsite.
Most pets are approved. However there is a $100 per each pet damage deposit. No smoking. And all visitors must smoke outside as well due to our insurance restrictions.
We are still defining it – but our vision definitely includes neighborliness and sustainability. If those values are in your vocabulary – you might be interested in checking us out. I have a very poorly kept up Facebook page for Zephyr Creek Crossing. Feel free to look at some of the pics. You can call me at 859 408-1564 or email me directly at sweetsue49 @ gmail.com to arrange a tour or to learn more about the unique community. There is a potential for equity positions or even purchase of the property down the road, if you are interested.
