The Savanna Hermitage is a small off grid solar powered solo retreat community of experienced practitioners of meditation, qigong, and yoga located near the Chiricahua mountains of Southeastern Arizona.
The Savanna Hermitage is currently accepting applications for solo retreat residents and guests at $200 per month rates. Experienced practitioners of meditation, qigong, and yoga are welcome to apply. Available short or longer term. Qualified individuals may inquire about scholarship and/or caretaker/work exchange. No outdoor pets, please (to protect the many wild rabbits, birds, etc).
This retreat offers the unique opportunity for experienced practitioners to have a solitary practice experience, while also benefiting from the support of other experienced practitioners onsite.
The Savanna Hermitage currently has openings for two small furnished private rooms available for individual residents and guests, each with a separate outdoor entrance, comfortable twin bed with complete bedding, shelves, clothes rack, table, and floor space for solo meditation and yoga. Each room is equipped with a meditation zabuton mat, seiza bench, crescent zafu cushion, and yoga mat.
The rooms are housed in a brand new zero carbon emissions eco cabin equipped with off-grid solar electric, passive solar heating, natural cooling, rainwater collection, and a passive solar box water heater. There is a shared kitchenette in the adjoining shed, and also a private outdoor bathing stall and dry composting toilet. In addition to staying in this cabin, residents and guests have the opportunity to learn about the construction and operation of a simple, inexpensive eco-cabin. Your carbon footprint while at the retreat is well below 10 percent of the average U.S. citizen. Perfect for low budget, eco-conscious, and simple living practitioners.
Very Covid-19 Safe: Each room is entirely private, with separate outdoor entrance. Any optional shared practice and activities are entirely outdoors, and masks can be worn and vehicles well ventilated as necessary when sharing transportation.
Residents and guests are requested to prepare their own food and meals at the Savanna Hermitage. Basic vegetarian and vegan food ingredients such as lentils, millet, pinto beans, brown rice, rolled oats, popcorn, walnuts, olive oil, seasonings, and some fresh produce are provided, and guests are welcome to bring and purchase locally their own food preferences. There is a small grocery 10 miles away with very limited options, and the nearest supermarket is 40 miles. The caretaker host often has some fresh home grown kale available, and there are plenty of containers provided of reverse osmosis filtered water filled at the water store.
The two available rooms share a well equipped kitchenette in the adjacent shed. Cooking appliances include two Instant Pots (digital electric cookers), a two burner propane stove, a microwave oven, a hot air popcorn popper, and an electric kettle for boiling water for tea, oatmeal, etc. Except for the propane stove, all appliances are powered by 100% clean electricity from the solar panels and batteries. The kitchenette is also fully stocked with pots, pans, plates, bowls, utensils, hot pads, towels, napkins, etc. A water container with dishpans filled from the minimally treated rainwater tank is used for washing dishes. There is no refrigerator onsite, and fresh produce is kept naturally cool in coolers. Instructions and recipes are provided to guests for preparing a variety of easy, quick, and healthy meals and snacks with the Instant Pots and other appliances. Residents and guests are also welcome to occasionally or periodically share meals upon coordination and request (optional).
