Strengthen your capacity for listening and speaking with compassion and clarity through challenging situations during this session with author\, educator and intentional community founder\, Miles Sherts. \nf \nAbout this Workshop\nThis 2-hour interactive online workshop will introduce tools to become more conscious in our daily communication with each other. We will begin by a discussion and demonstration of disconnects – common habits that may appear to create connection but actually put more distance between us. We will then learn the basic communication skill of Supportive Listening – listening in order to understand another person and activate our natural capacity for empathy. These skills are useful in any kind of relationship\, especially in times of conflict or tension. They are key to successful relationships and healthy intentional communities. \nf \nDuring this workshop you will learn how to:\n\nbe able to listen without judgments\nhold space for another person to work out their own dilemma\nde-escalate emotionally charged conversations\nbuild understanding and empathy in your relationships\nunderstand someone you have difficulty with\nmaintain healthy boundaries that enable deeper caring and connection\n\n\n\n  \n\nf\n\n\nf\n\n \nAbout Miles Sherts:\nMiles began learning interpersonal communication skills in college as part of a student program using a collective decision making process. He later expanded this learning into conflict resolution and mediation skills while facilitating meetings for several years in an intentional community. In 1988 he did a nine month training to become a professional mediator\, which led to his teaching communication and conflict resolution skills in schools\, colleges\, and other settings for the next 25 years. Miles taught interpersonal communication and conflict management classes regularly at the Community College of Vermont for 23 years. During that time he wrote and edited his first book\, Conscious Communication to use as a classroom text. He currently offers private intensive workshops for groups and private sessions and retreats for couples focused on communication skills. \nMiles is the author of Conscious Communication for Couples – A guide for couples\, Beyond Perception- A Guide to Meditation\, and Conscious Communication – A Language of Connection (all available on Amazon.com). He has practiced and taught Insight Meditation from the Buddhist tradition for over 40 years. And he spent 32 years developing and managing a wholistic retreat center\, organic permaculture farm\, and conscious community in Vermont. He is driven by a passion to help people understand each other\, make room for our differences\, and get our needs met in all of our relationships.

This interactive session is for people of all ethnicities and experience in community. \nf \nKey points to be covered:\n\n\nHow to gracefully respond to accusations of racism\n\n\nHow to argue productively with your racist relatives\n\n\nHow to choose the right activist organization\n\n\nHow to convince your community to change harmful policies\n\n\nf \n\n\nf\n\n\nf\n\nAbout the presenter:\nCrystal Byrd Farmer is a North Carolina native active in the cohousing and polyamorous communities. SUMMARY:Conflict Resolution Workshop: fight\, flight\, or opportunity? with Laird Schaub
DESCRIPTION:Register below to get the recording or join live Tuesday\, July 16th | 1-3pm pacific / 4-6pm eastern (your local time) \n  \nThis informative session will explore ways to address conflict and interpersonal tensions within communities… or any group that wants to work constructively with their feelings. The online learning session will be led by Laird Schaub\, an early founder of FIC and with decades of intentional community living and consulting experience. \nf \nAbout this Workshop\nWhy do we conduct meetings as if working rationally is the only option? As humans we are emotional beings\, too\, and we miss out on both information and energy when we disallow feelings as welcome input. While most of us haven’t been raised to work constructively with strong emotions\, it can be done! \nf \nKey points to be covered:\n\nDefining conflict\nWhy work on conflict at all?\nWhy work in the dynamic moment?\nWhy work on it in the group?\nMethod for working with conflict\nHints for facilitating conflict\nOptions when upset\nWhy work unilaterally?\n\nf \n\n\n  \n\nf\n\n\nf\n\nAbout Laird Schaub:\nLaird lived for four decades (1974-2014) at Sandhill Farm\, an income-sharing rural community that he helped found. He also helped found the Fellowship for Intentional Community\, a clearinghouse of information about North American communities of all stripes\, and served as that organization’s main administrator for 28 years (1987-2015). In 1987 he created a self-insurance fund for health care needs among income-sharing communities called PEACH (Preservation of Equity Accessible for Community Health) that he ran for 22 years (1987-2009)\, growing it from a dream to a loan fund with net assets over $500\,000. In addition to his expertise in community living\, he’s parlayed his passion for good process into a consulting business focused on cooperative group dynamics\, styled CANBRIDGE (Consensus And Network Building for Resolving Impasse and Developing Group Effectiveness)\, which he’s been doing since 1987. \nf \nLaird’s specialty is up-tempo inclusive meetings that engage the full range of human input\, teaching groups to work creatively with conflict and diversity—all the while being ruthless about capturing as much product as possible. As both a consultant and a teacher he pioneered a facilitation and leadership training program where students meet eight times in three-day weekends spread out over two years. Since launching that in 2003\, he’s delivered the program 14 times in locations all across the US. Since 2007 he’s authored a blog that has more than 1200 entries\, writing about group dynamics\, intentional community\, and his life along the way: http://communityandconsensus.blogspot.com/

SUMMARY:Examining White Supremacy Culture in Intentional Community
DESCRIPTION:Examining White Culture & White Supremacy in Intentional Community from Intentional Community Videos on Vimeo. \n\nRegister below to join on Tuesday\, July 7th | 1pm pacific / 4pm eastern (See your local time) \n  \nf \nAbout this Workshop\nMost intentional communities are predominantly if not entirely white. Even if this isn’t intentional\, this isn’t an accident or coincidence. There are myriad barriers to creating and joining intentional communities\, and those barriers are higher for Black\, Indigenous\, and People Of Color. Living in an intentional community is a privilege\, and more and more people are recognizing the need to make their communities more inclusive and accessible. \nAs white people\, most of us are just beginning to learn about how the culture of our communities\, as well as other barriers like finances\, policies\, and procedures\, prevent having the kind of diversity we think we want and what it would actually take to change. This is hard\, uncomfortable work that will take time\, and we need to support and learn from each other. \nIn this online workshop we’ll take a look at what white culture is\, how it manifests as white supremacy within our communities\, and share ideas and stories about how to affect meaningful change. This workshop is open to all participants but is geared towards white people. \nf \nDuring this workshop you will gain:\n\nA deeper understanding of what white culture and white supremacy are\nGreater insight into how those things play out in intentional communities\nIdeas for how your community can begin to identify cultural and other barriers to accessibility and inclusivity\n\nf \nf\n\nf\n\n\nf\n\n \nAbout Sky Blue:\nSky Blue has spent the last 20 years living\, working\, and organizing in intentional communities\, cooperatives\, and community organizations. He has visited over 130 ecovillages\, cohousing\, coliving\, co-ops\, and communes in the US and Europe. He served as the Executive Director for the Foundation for Intentional Community and has worked for the Federation of Egalitarian Communities\, Global Ecovillage Network of North America\, and consulted with a variety of projects and events. As a movement builder he explores the relevance of intentional communities as laboratories and training grounds for addressing the systemic problems humanity faces. Learn more at incommunity.us

SUMMARY:Communal Studies Association Conference
DESCRIPTION:Attendees at the 2019 Communal Studies Conference October 17-19\, 2019 will experience a change of pace from most CSA meetings – instead of meeting at an historic communal site\, we will instead meet at one of America’s premier decorative arts museums\, Winterthur Museum\, Garden and Library.  The vision of Henry Francis DuPont\, the house contains his extensive collection of antiques\, including numerous Shaker pieces. Its vast 2600-acre site is beautifully landscaped and the Winterthur library contains the Edward Deming Andrews Shaker manuscript collection and the papers of other historic communities\, including Arden and Rose Valley. \nLocal arrangements chair Tom Guiler\, an Assistant Professor of Humanities at Winterthur and a CSA board member\, is planning special tours of the collections pertinent to intentional communities.  Attendees will also be able to take a free general public tour of the museum and gardens on their own during the conference. \nThe theme for the conference is “Space\, Place and the Spirit of Material Culture\,” is appropriate for a meeting in a place so brimming over with artifacts of communities\, intentional or otherwise.  Many presentations will focus on the theme. The preliminary program is now online at www.communalstudies.org/annualconference as is registration information. \nPre-Conference Tours \nTwo tours are planned before the conference.  Wednesday\, October 16 will feature tours\, led by Tom Guiler\, to nearby Arden\, a single-tax community\, and Rose Valley\, a turn of the 20th century arts and crafts community.  Thursday’s tour is to Greenbelt\, Maryland\, a Depression-era planned community\, near Washington\, D. C. Space on the tours is limited\, so sign up early. \nTravel and Accommodations \nThe Crowne Plaza Wilmington North at 630 Naamans Rd.\, Claymont\, DE 19703 has been selected as the conference hotel.  It is approximately 22 minutes via DE 92 East from the museum. Cost is $119 per night\, double occupancy.  Call the hotel at 302-792-2700 directly for reservations and say you are with CSA.  Room reservations should be made at least a month in advance\, as any rooms not reserved at that time will be released by the hotel after September 17.   \nAttendees using air transportation should use Philadelphia\, PA (PHL) airport.  No shuttle service is available from the airport to the hotel\, so attendees should anticipate either renting a car or using ride-hailing services.  Likewise\, no service from the hotel to the conference site or dinner venues is anticipated\, so attendees are encouraged to pair up with other attendees who do have transportation.   \nWe have a discounted rate for community members\, and we hope you will want to attend.  For more information\, go to www.communalstudies.org/annualconference .

SUMMARY:International Communal Studies Association Conference
DESCRIPTION:The ICSA thirteenth international conference will explore strategies that intentional communities use to promote the inclusion and empowerment of persons of diverse abilities\, cultures\, races\, economic backgrounds\, religions\, ages\, genders\, and sexualities. It will explore intentional communities and community movements that focus on the experiences of groups that have historically been marginalized—as\, for example\, the Camphill movement does for persons with intellectual disabilities. \nWhat can the field of communal studies learn from the unique experiences of such communities? What are the implications of community choices that seek to increase or to limit diversity? How have communities succeeded or failed in their efforts to increase diversity or strengthen inclusion? Under what circumstances is it appropriate or necessary for an intentional community to limit certain forms of diversity? What is the relationship between the mere presence of previously excluded persons in a community\, and the full inclusion and empowerment of those persons? What lessons might intentional communities share with other persons and organizations committed to diversity\, inclusion\, and empowerment? \nRegistration fee is $250\, which includes meals but not housing. Limited housing will be available onsite at the host communities\, with additional possibilities at nearby hotels. Participants who wish a deeper immersion in Camphill life may participate in a pre-conference immersion experience on July 15-17 for an additional $50. Participants who wish to experience a few other\, nearby intentional communities may join a post-conference tour on July 22-23\, with cost and details to be announced later. \nThe ICSA is a forum for exchanging scholarship\, information\, ideas and experiences on intentional community. Its purpose is to provide a common framework for a scholarly exchange of information regarding communal life; communes\, intentional communities\, kibbutzim and other collective communities throughout the world.
