At L’Arche Portland, people with and without intellectual disabilities (ID) are transformed by working together to create home and build friendships together. We celebrate how each of us is unique, as we welcome people of all backgrounds and spiritual journeys to find connection and belonging.

In the spirit of the Disability Justice movement, we acknowledge our need for one another. We are “not fighting for independence… [We are] fighting for an interdependence that embraces need and tells the truth: no one does it on their own… the myth of independence is just that, a myth.” (Mia Mingus)

A L’Arche community is a place to connect and grow. We invite people who are different from each other to celebrate and be together – in three homes and at regular gatherings.

Each member’s “yes” to share life is at the heart of our community. Living in our homes involves working together in a spirit of cooperation, eating meals, celebrating, attending meetings together, and welcoming new friends.

When our community says “yes” to a new member, we must also adapt and change, so that everyone can fully and meaningfully participate.

Our homes are surrounded by a circle of friends that includes family, friends, staff, members of other L’Arche homes, and members of other L’Arche communities.

We are currently seeking members to live in our newest home in Beaverton, Oregon. In this home, adults with and without intellectual disabilities build community together, without a paid caregiving relationship with each other.

All are encouraged to pursue activities beyond the home, including employment, school, and community engagement. Those who need support with activities of daily living contract with support workers on an hourly basis.

House members pay a monthly Program & Residential fee, which varies according to bedroom size and shared/private bathroom. Current range: $450-600/mo
