Power differences impact community dynamics and challenge relationships. This lecture will address a variety of common power imbalances, how to identify and better address them.
About the event
In community, we strive to be egalitarian. Too often, however, our efforts to minimize power differences result instead in turning a blind eye to imbalances—hindering the community’s ability to transmute power dynamics to the advantage of the group
This lecture will name common power dynamics in community and offer a criteria for determining when power differences are appropriate and effective versus when they are interfering with good community process and connection.
Coming from a hierarchical world where power differences are fostered, nurtured and often abused, we tend to bring some of that culture with us into community—without even being conscious of it. Typically, those who are most able to make changes to power dynamics are the same people who are least likely to see them, and vice versa. Join us to learn strategies for becoming conscious of power differences and naming them in ways that don’t pit one person or group against another.
In this session, you’ll learn about:
- Power differences that are useful in community settings
- How unconscious power differences impact community process
- Strategies for addressing power differences, especially when some people see them and others do not
About your presenter
Karen Gimnig
Karen is a group facilitator, motivational speaker and relationship coach. Her passion is to help groups achieve their goals for connected and trusting relationships through skill building and personal exploration.
As an Imago Facilitator, Karen uses the theory and practice of Imago Relationships to guide teams and communities through the complexity of working together. She helps groups and individuals identify root causes of challenges and then walks beside them offering gentle support as they seek solutions.
Karen enjoys working with non-profit organizations, communities (including communities of faith), and workplaces. Her clients describe her as “profoundly effective,” increasing trust and providing simple (but not easy) tools for improved communication and relationships.
