Leave Your Legacy of Cooperation and Sustainability
by Harvey Baker, President of the FIC Board of Directors

We often think of the last day of the year as an important deadline for making contributions to our favorite charities. When thinking long term, no matter our age, we can plan any day of the year for the legacy we’ll leave behind once we pass on.

For those of us who loyally support non-profits with our time and resources when we are alive, it is reassuring to know that our support does not need to end at our death. If you support the Foundation for Intentional Community now, we invite you to consider our organization’s mission and future when planning your estate.

Does FIC embody your values of cooperation, community and sustainability? If ‘yes’, FIC would like to continue your efforts to create a better world into the future. We can work together to accomplish this through a planned gift.

Planned ‘legacy’ gifts involve designating a specific asset, amount, or percentage of your resources to FIC in your will. They can involve cash, stocks, bonds, real estate, or other assets, or you can name FIC as a residual beneficiary of your estate.

These legacy gifts support FIC’s long-term financial health and offer rich sources of funds to further the cooperative culture movement.

Some other relatively simple legacy giving options include:

  • Qualified Charitable Distributions can be made to FIC from your IRA if you are
70 1/2 years of age or older and count toward satisfying required minimum distributions for the year.
  • Gifts of stocks and mutual funds may reduce capital gains tax liabilities as well as result in a charitable income tax deduction.
  • Life insurance plans can name FIC as a beneficiary for a specific amount or percent, or the policy can be donated outright.

A number of years ago, after being on the board of the FIC for a couple decades, I realized I could include the FIC in my will, making it the recipient of some of my community assets. I encourage you to think creatively and act generously to determine what assets you could leave to the FIC for its future work. Thanks for helping make the FIC’s future more abundant and sustainable.

Please visit our website to learn more or contact Carrie, our Development Director, with any questions or to inform us if you have decided to make a gift.

In community,
Harvey
