Community Land Trust Reader
edited by John Emmeus Davis
Hardcover; 616 pages
$35

“The community land trust (CLT) arrived quietly on the American scene in the late 1960s, an outgrowth of the civil rights movement in the Deep South.” Throughout the following decades, CLTs steadily grew in rural, urban and suburban areas and expanded to other countries.

Originally conceived as a mechanism for African-American farmers to gain access to agricultural land, it soon found many other uses, including affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. CLTs continue to take new shape and have new significance for intentional communities and community action.

The Community Land Trust Reader is a complete compilation of essays examining “contemporary applications of the CLT in promoting home ownership, spurring community development, protecting public investment, and capturing land gains for the common good.” The compilation begins with exploring the precursors, pioneers, and purposes of CLTs. The book then traverses affordable housing and movements beyond housing and the United States, and finishes with a section, “Beyond the Horizon” in which authors describe the opportunities
and challenges for the CLT movement ahead.

For anyone curious about, living within, or exploring community land trusts, this is an essential book for one’s repertoire.

Speaking of complete compilations, The Foundation for Intentional Community is working on a new updated edition of the Communities Directory―an online and printed catalog of intentional communities in the US, and all over the planet. For 25 years you’ve been relying on the directory to find connection and community. But we need your help! We can’t complete this extensive project without you.
