A New Game Called "Rise Up" Explores Cooperative Social Movements

The Toolbox for Education and Social Action (TESA) is launching a Kickstarter for a new board game on September 27th. Called “Rise Up: The Game of People and Power,” the game is a great way to spend time with friends, while exploring social movements and learning to cooperate to achieve shared objectives. According to TESA,

“The game weaves a story about your movement, which can be either based in reality (like stopping an oil pipeline) or fictional (like fighting for dragon rights). But ‘the System’ is hard at work too, maneuvering to crush your movement through tactics like setting up surveillance, making arrests, or causing infighting.”

The game is designed by the same team that created “Co-opoly: The Game of Cooperatives,” and is an alternative to competitive board games that glorify warfare and colonialism. You can play it with your community or co-workers as a team-building exercise, or to explore strategies for social change and grassroots activism.

Plus, Rise Up offers two ways to play: the reverse side of the game board features Rise Up Simplified, which is perfect for younger players or for people newer to collaborative board games. The game will be crowdfunded and manufactured by a worker co-operative, bringing the principles of the game full-circle.
