Daniel Greenberg, FIC Co-Director

A wise person once told me, “At every level of the nested hierarchy of life, we can look down for function and up for purpose.”

For example, as individuals, our hearts, kidneys, and other organs are functionary to us. We are their purpose. Going deeper, our organs have functionary tissues, cells, organelles and so on, all the way down.

Looking up from ourselves then, the question becomes, “What are we functionary of? What is our purpose?” The answer seems obvious — community! And beyond that, a community of communities! And so on, all the way up.

This is why we’re so excited to bring together the FIC and my 25+ year background with the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN). Energizing the North American node of GEN will allow the FIC to simultaneously focus more on engagement and gatherings with communities in the U.S. and Canada and also expand our connections to communities and resources in Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Oceania and Asia.

What do you think? Head over to our Forum Discussion and let us know “What does ‘Act locally; Think globally’ mean to you?” What is the value of connecting with global networks — both for the FIC and for you personally? What are some other new visions for the communities movement?

Also, as you can imagine, going “glocal” is a monumental task that will require a great deal of effort and expertise to accomplish. Please donate to the FIC today to help us meet our goals and to co-create our future of global cooperation and community.

Here’s to new visions for the communities movement.

Thank you!

In community,

Daniel Greenberg

FIC Co-Director

Intentional communities are intrinsically idealistic. They’re based on a radical analysis of social problems and are an attempt to address them. They represent a personal desire to live in a way that feels more satisfying, but also the desire for a better society for all people. They are a recogniti…
