“The community land trust (CLT) arrived quietly on the American scene in the late 1960s, an outgrowth of the civil rights movement in the Deep South.” Throughout the following decades, CLTs steadily grew in rural, urban and suburban areas and expanded to other countries.
Originally conceived as a mechanism for African-American farmers to gain access to agricultural land, it soon found many other uses, including affordable housing and neighborhood revitalization. CLTs continue to take new shape and have new significance for intentional communities and community action.

The book then traverses affordable housing and movements beyond housing and the United States, and finishes with a section, “Beyond the Horizon” in which authors describe the opportunities
and challenges for the CLT movement ahead.
