Interpersonal communication is the #1 skill needed to be able to thrive in an intentional community. Do you want to learn the essentials of conscious communication to be able to live and work with others productively? Strengthen your capacity for listening and speaking with compassion and clarity through challenging situations during this session with author, educator and intentional community founder, Miles Sherts.
About this Workshop
This 2-hour interactive online workshop will introduce the concept of becoming more conscious in our daily communication with each other. We will begin by a discussion and demonstration of disconnects – common habits that may appear to create connection but actually put more distance between us. We will then learn the basic communication skill of Supportive Listening – listening in order to understand another person and activate our natural capacity for empathy. These skills are useful in any kind of relationship, especially in times of conflict or tension. They are key to successful relationships and healthy intentional communities.
During this workshop you will learn how to:
- be able to listen without judgments
- hold space for another person to work out their own dilemma
- de-escalate emotionally charged conversations
- build understanding and empathy in your relationships
- understand someone you have difficulty with
- maintain healthy boundaries that enable deeper caring and connection

About Miles Sherts:
Miles began learning interpersonal communication skills in college as part of a student program using a collective decision making process. He later expanded this learning into conflict resolution and mediation skills while facilitating meetings for several years in an intentional community. In 1988 he did a nine month training to become a professional mediator, which led to his teaching communication and conflict resolution skills in schools, colleges, and other settings for the next 25 years. Miles taught interpersonal communication and conflict management classes regularly at the Community College of Vermont for 23 years. During that time he wrote and edited his first book, Conscious Communication to use as a classroom text. He currently offers private intensive workshops for groups and private sessions and retreats for couples focused on communication skills.
Miles is the author of Conscious Communication for Couples – A guide for couples, Beyond Perception- A Guide to Meditation, and Conscious Communication – A Language of Connection (all available on Amazon.com). He has practiced and taught Insight Meditation from the Buddhist tradition for over 40 years. And he spent 32 years developing and managing a wholistic retreat center, organic permaculture farm, and conscious community in Vermont. He is driven by a passion to help people understand each other, make room for our differences, and get our needs met in all of our relationships.
