Update: The Universe Building experienced an arson fire in December of 2023 . Although we did receive a $20,000 grant just before the fire we were unable to secure a new location in time to utilize the grant award. Instead we had to get more practical and purchased our first land bank house , have since passed inspection and awarded ownership and deed to 1969 Ford St. in Detroit, this time on south side of Highland Park. Currently we are in process of obtaining the side lots (land) for our community garden. We do currently host travelers, musicians, artists, activists for work trade and if applicable can live here longer term if requested. Our next steps are to save up enough additional funding to purchase a second land bank or tax auction property so we can raise enough capital to purchase a new project center to reopen a new chapter of U.I.O. almost exactly what we had described going on described below at our previous intentional community project center only this time actually own it outright thru the non-profit and have even more sovereignty and human rights to function and operate in terms of our anarchist eco-friendly D.I.Y. independent collectivist space for workshops and commons programs to support local artists and establish permaculture & sustainability in Detroit not just for our gardening program but for permanent residential intentional community , music & performing arts & cultural events , independent publishing and infoshop commons areas , workshops for our bike coop & upcyclery free store / recycling program , community kitchen / bakery coop including the U.I.O. radio & media center .
