The Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood is based on a deep commitment to enhance Bali’s environmental, social, cultural and economic sustainability. It is being created to demonstrate a model for sustainable living and community empowerment that upholds the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which balances our harmony with man, nature, and God or Universal Energy.
The neighborhood includes 20 self contained private plots, supported by a range of common facilities including: waste and wastewater treatment, Permaculture landscaping, pool, playground, barbecue area, amphitheater and pavilion for workshops and events.
<The members of the Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood are committed to the principles of sustainability and regeneration. For us, sustainability is achieved through an integrated, holistic approach, which is outlined in the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana. Tri Hita Karana describes how we develop based on three direct relationships: our relationship with the environment, our relationship with other beings, and our relationship with God or Universal Energy.

In designing and managing Taman Petanu Eco Neighborhood, the following internationally recognized principles for sustainable development are being used to the maximum degree possible:
Ecological Principles
Materials are from renewable or non-depletable resources, recyclable and durable
Design considers efficient energy use and the use of renewable and self-generated energy
Efficient water use and environmentally friendly and self-sufficient (gray and black) waste water disposal
The landscape design is based on principles of regeneration and sustainability
Biological Principles
Materials should be as much as possible of natural origin and durable
Materials are of low toxicity and not output any harmful chemicals
Environments should not promote, accumulate or circulate harmful vapors, bacteria, viruses and / or fungi
Building design should include natural ventilation and minimize or avoid use of air conditioning
Buildings should be adequately insulated against unwanted noise, and use natural lighting
Social and Community Principles
The design of the neighborhood will foster healthy family and community relationships
Housing is planned to be away from traffic routes and centers of activity
Community outreach activities that benefit the surrounding village and farmers
A few people (not elected by the broader community) make the major decisions.
