Maitri House is an urban intentional community in Takoma Park, Maryland (right outside Washington, DC), that was founded in 2008. We aim to be a supportive, connected, multigenerational, and family-friendly community that finds meaning and enjoyment in living together. We strive to live more sustainably and to act with concern for the well-being of people and the planet. Daily, we experience the joys and challenges of living in community.

Power and responsibility are shared relatively equally among members.
We do not see consensus as precisely “everyone agrees.” We use values-based consensus and also take into consideration other factors in our consensus process. Please see our purpose description our website for brief additional information.
Members maintain separate personal finances with minimal sharing.
Join fee: $800
Regular fees: Yes
Labor: Yes (5 hrs/week)
Members with pre-existing debt: allowed
Labor hours are for our Community Service Share, a few hours per week
Financial contributions go to members’ equity accounts, occupancy costs, and community fund (which is used for our shared supplies and food). Room occupancy costs vary by room.
