Irish House is a community-minded shared household in a large 1905 Victorian home within walking distance of downtown South Boston, Virginia. We are looking for one additional housemate who wants both a private place of their own and a friendly, cooperative household.
The available corner bedroom is a comfortable size, has multiple windows, modern wiring, overhead lighting, central air conditioning, and a lockable door. It can be furnished or left unfurnished. Residents share a full kitchen, washer and dryer, generous common spaces, three porches, and off-street parking. The house has three full bathrooms; two are generally available to housemates and provide both shower and bathtub options across the two floors.
Irish House is a real, lived-in historic home that is being restored in phases. Major exterior and systems work has been completed, but some interior spaces remain works in progress. There may be boxes, tools, imperfect plaster, peeling paint, or planned projects. We want to be honest about that because the right housemate will find the house interesting and full of potential rather than expecting a polished apartment complex.
Community here means being considerate, communicating directly, cleaning up after yourself, and taking part in a reasonable rotation for shared bathrooms, the kitchen, and common areas. We hold brief household check-ins twice a month. Shared meals, gardening, creative projects, and renovation activities are welcome but are not mandatory or substitutes for rent.
Rent for the available room is $650 per month plus an equal share of actual household utilities, currently expected to be approximately $120-$160 per person depending on season, use, and occupancy. Utilities are shared for ordinary residential use; documented costs caused by materially excessive consumption are outside the shared amount and are the responsible resident’s obligation. A $650 security deposit is required. The agreement is written and month-to-month.
Applicants should have verifiable income or savings sufficient to pay consistently. Our process includes an initial conversation, a video or in-person tour, references and screening, and an opportunity for everyone in the household to determine whether the arrangement feels workable. No indoor pets. Assistance-animal requests will be considered as required by applicable law.

We begin with an email or phone conversation, followed by a video or in-person tour. Applicants provide references and information sufficient for standard screening, and current residents have an opportunity to discuss whether the arrangement appears workable for everyone.
Selected housemates sign a written month-to-month rental agreement and pay the first month’s rent and security deposit before moving in. New residents participate in household check-ins and the shared chore rotation from the beginning. Shared meals, gardening, creative activities, and renovation work are optional.
Day-to-day household decisions are collaborative where practical, while the owner retains final responsibility for legal, structural, safety, financial, and property decisions.

Irish House uses brief household check-ins and a practical, collaborative approach to decisions affecting shared daily life. Residents help shape chore systems, common-space expectations, schedules, and other matters that directly affect the household. The owner retains final responsibility for legal obligations, safety, structural work, major financial commitments, and protection of the property.

Residents are financially independent and do not share income. Rent for the currently available room is $650 per month plus an equal share of actual household utilities. Based on recent household costs, a resident’s share is expected to be approximately $120-$160 per month, depending on season, use, and the number of residents. There is no separate membership fee.
Utilities are shared for ordinary residential use. If one resident’s consumption materially exceeds ordinary household levels, the documented excess cost is outside the shared amount and is that resident’s responsibility. A security deposit equal to one month’s rent is required. Renters insurance is encouraged.
Normal household chores are shared. Renovation work, gardening, creative projects, and other larger contributions are welcome but are not required or substitutes for rent.
