What we do

We are a family-friendly, off-grid collective focused on creativity, self sufficiency, and simpler living. Children are people and people are children. We are all learning and growing in a vibrant, integrated world. We work together, we play together.
We live on a piece of Monacan land – 44 acres of woods and wetlands. Most of the place is mature hardwoods, with some pine groves, some younger forest and two spring-fed creeks. Our spot is about 45 minutes to Richmond, Charlottesville, and Fredericksburg, and about two hours to DC, the mountains, and the ocean. There are several established small communities in the area, creating an unusual social scene for such a rural area.
We moved onto raw land in 2023 and have developed some infrastructure including onsite water, common kitchen, solar power, and clearings for growing food. Things are very rustic. We work toward meeting collective and individual lifestyle needs, but also value simplicity and plan to keep things pretty rustic.
How do we do things here? We value personal autonomy and mutual support. We are scrappy and adaptable, noticing and following vigor instead of plodding forward. We communicate with each other. We support each other. We expect to meet each other where we are – we each have vulnerabilities, capacity swings, needs, and feelings. We embrace our neurodivergences and the diversity of our mental illness. We are artists, musicians, and makers who foster a culture around creative expression.
We share a deep connection to nature and a commitment to live more sustainable lifestyles. The members of collective broke out of the cage of normal living by adapting alternative dwellings, living off-grid, and/or living in intentional communities. Now we are coming together to create a collective homestead that nourishes our minds and bodies.
The majority of our civilization is running on perpetual growth and choking our planet in countless ways. Our intention is to live a more ecologically responsible lifestyle and to ultimately make more out of less. We plant trees, grow vegetables, and raise chickens and ducks. We mill our own lumber and build our own common structures. We live in tiny houses and question consumption.
Since people are learning and growing as long as they live, we encourage self-care and engage in mental health support from within our collective as well as from outside sources. We will keep open minds and adaptable systems so that the community breathes and changes as its residents change and grow. We share an understanding that in the pursuit of increased sustainability and the back-to-the-land dream there are trade offs between money, time, and quality. We will compromise and flex to get where we are going. We are all adventuresome people who like to travel. We welcome friends come visit.
We would love to connect with people who share our interests as well as people with different and complementary skill sets. If you want to connect, please reach out via the contact form.

How to join

If you are interested in joining our collective, send us an email. Depending on your location we can meet in person or set up video calls to get to know each other. We want to create a stable and lasting community, so there will be a “dating” period in which we see how we get along and if our values are compatible.
We do not have open housing units for incoming folks. To land here you should have your own portable dwelling and be comfortable roughing it for a while.
Our typical membership process consists of

        1. getting to know each other over a period of weeks/months by answering questions or talking via email, phone, or day visits
        1. visiting for a short stay (3 days) to meet and connect, followed by a period of at least 1 week away
        1. visiting for a longer stay (2-3 weeks) to try out living together, followed by a period of at least 1 week away
        1. living here for 1 year as a provisional member

There will be check-ins throughout the membership process.
We expect prospective members to engage in community projects, socialize, build trust, communicate nonviolently, navigate conflict proactively, bring their own dwelling and comfort, and solve logistical problems both both collectively and independently. We are seeking curious, connected, flexible, and kind collaborators. We need diversity of perspectives and talents to take on this project. We need folks who are open minded.

Basic expectations or agreements for members

Please reach out if you are interested in a visit. We plan all visits in advance. If you wish to stay the night here you can bring your own small mobile dwelling, stay in our tiny guesthouse, pitch a tent (we have plenty), or potentially we can find a host for you at a nearby community or group house if you would prefer indoor lodging.

Primary decision-making authority

  • All Community Members Together

The whole membership decides collectively.

Decision-making process

  • Modified Consensus

Generally seek agreement, but have backup methods when consensus isn’t reached.

Governance structure

  • Collaborative/Horizontal

Power and responsibility are shared relatively equally among members.

Conflict resolution approach

As a general governance philosophy, we prefer to leave more decisions up to individuals rather than running everything through group process. If it only concerns you and your personal space, go for it. If your proposal will affect others and be difficult to undo, we use collective decision making. When in doubt, check in about it.
In our process, we share our thoughts, seek a gut check, and get consent from everyone in a process that is “consensish” without full blown consensus process. We often use 5 finger consensus check-ins, discuss and ask questions, and modify proposals in order to reach consent. We think things through together.
There are 3 circles of decision-making, related to the commitment and length of stay of different individuals.
The Bramble Collective consists of all individuals that stay here and work on projects. Folks have autonomy over themselves and are involved in decision making appropriate for their length of stay and the projects they are a part of. If it’s going to last longer than you are, it’s going to involve more process.
We have a legal entity, Bramble LLC, consisting of the group of folks who share values and are committed to this project longer term. Long term decisions are held by this group. Collective homestead business lives in this LLC. As such, decisions related to shared income and expenses are held by this group. Though everyone will discuss a proposal, the folks that are going to live with the ramifications of a decision have the primary say in that decision.
The ownership of the land is held by one individual. Decisions that affect the value of the land will be discussed with others, but are ultimately up to this individual. In the next year we seek to divide off part of the land to be held collectively.

Economic model

  • Partial Income-Sharing

Members contribute a percentage of income to community funds.

Economic scenarios for this community

  • There is a one-time fee, investment, or share purchase to join the community separate from accessing housing
  • Members need to pay fees, dues, or similar to live there on a per month or per year basis
  • There is a labor obligation

Additional economic information

Join fee: $0
Regular fees: $0
Labor: Yes (10 hrs/week)
We are still working out our community economics but we entered into this project with a strong energy of “we are all in this together.” We have an LLC and are working to set it up as a collective homestead. In the meantime the members of Bramble are self employed and/or low income.
Our current members engage in varied income sources including building, education, art, skilled craft, and food production. As a group we also seek to empower others to start their own enterprises within our nest. If you join you can bring an existing business with you, a dream, a skill set, or a willingness to participate in what other folks have going on. Collective homestead income pursuits will run under the Bramble LLC umbrella.
It is important that folks feel safe investing time and participation here and not walk away empty handed if and when they return to the wider world. If you bring or develop a business while here and then you depart, you can take it with you. When Bramble gets to a point of earning more than we spend we will make annual or semi annual group decisions about allocation of funds: in a given year some portion of income will be invested in infrastructure and some portion will be divided equally amongst members.

Do you feel called to help co-create a small, newly forming eco-spiritual community?

Old structures are crumbling. New ways of living are calling. We are answering that call. Wild Grace is an eco-spiritual community located in the Sierra foothills 30 minutes from Grass Valley, California. We recently completed new homes for those who feel called to our vision. Currently there are four of us living on this sacred 80 acres of land although we are a hub for an expanded neighborhood community. Many join us weekly for potlucks, expressive dance, Qi Gong, monthly musical gatherings, and seasonal celebrations in our temple, as well as tending to our orchard. We are excited to welcome others to join us on the land who are dedicating their lives to spiritual growth and ready to live in a more focused and intimate heart-centered lifestyle. Might that be you or someone you know? The fundamentals are simple. Spirit. We listen personally and collectively together most mornings, usually starting with a musical offering, a prayer, or a short reading, followed by about 40 minutes of what we call “sacred silence.” Heart Circles. About once a week we gather to share and listen. We are informed by authentic and compassionate communication practices. Nature. The land itself—an 80-acre oasis of field and forest perched above the wild and scenic South Yuba River—calls for our stewardship in the gardens, orchard, greenhouses, and general care. In turn, nature feeds us abundantly, both literally and spiritually. Interbeing. We join with others to share inspiration and connection as we host monthly gatherings of song, story and prayer that draws from the larger community in addition to other events we share with our closer neighbors. As we attend to these fundamentals, Grace flows to and through us—often in “Wild” or unexpected ways. Grace catalyzes through us, but is not something we possess. Because we all are connected, we feel that Grace actively transforms n

Housing Co-op in Berkeley, CA has two member openings for 1-bedroom units

Parker Street Cooperative (PSC) – a co-owned housing co-op in Berkeley – has two openings for 1-bedroom units for new prospective members! THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS 11:59PM ON NOV 1ST, 2026 You can find the application on our website at parkerstcoop.org Our monthly assessment for a 1-bedroom will likely be just $675 (compared with average rent of about $2,400 for a 1-bedroom in Berkeley). This covers all our shared costs. This is a great opportunity to become a fellow co-owner at a very affordable cost and secure long-term low-cost housing with a co-op community in a fantastic location in Berkeley! The current  share price for a 1-bedroom membership is about $30,600 (which is a small fraction of market rates and entirely refunded/sold back with nominal interest if a member leaves the co-op) ONE-TIME CAPITAL CONTRIBUTION FEE Lastly, if admitted, becoming a member also requires a one-time, nonrefundable $6,000 Capital Contribution Fee, which helps sustain the co-op property. For example, renovating a unit prior to move-in averages about $12,000.   CO-OP DETAILS PSC has 24 units in two buildings. We’re located in a highly convenient Berkeley location, fairly near the UC Berkeley campus, downtown, a bunch of grocery stores, Ashby Avenue, the Berkeley hills, two BART stations and other public transportation, and just two blocks west of Telegraph and two blocks south of Dwight.   The apartments have beautiful, nearly wall-to-wall windows in the living room, sizable windows in the bedroom and kitchen, hardwood floors, and original Art Deco kitchens and bathrooms. Shared spaces include common rooms, rooftop decks, beautiful though moderate garden spaces (17 fruiting plants!), high-quality fitness equipment, a very well-equipped maintenance room, bike/storage space, and a rear parking lot. MAKING IT POSSIBLE We co-own and manage the property and work together to help keep it very affordable for us and for those who come after us. For that reason, we need people who are excited and prepared to contribute substantial time, energy, and skills to the co-op, such as project leadership, budget management, facilitation, conflict mediation, administration and/or gardening. An ability to get along with a wide range of different people is also highly desirable, and prior co-op experience, or similar experience with cooperative or community-based living, is a plus. MAINTENANCE SKILLS — HIGHEST PRIORITY FOR THIS OPENING For these specific openings, substantial maintenance experience/skills are a major priority! 9-MONTH PROSPECTIVE TRIAL PERIOD The final two candidates selected after our interview process would first enter a 9-month fixed-term tenancy. As a tenant, the candidate would pay $1,675/month in rent, along with a $1,675 security deposit (which is either refunded or credited towards the share value). Near the end of the 9 months, the co-op will make a final decision about whether to offer the candidate admission as a co-op co-owner. CO-OP TOURS We’re planning to organize at least two tours of the co-op property in October before the application deadline. If you’d be interested in joining a tour, please contact us at pa***************************@***il.com and let us know. We don’t have openings that often, and each one is a special opportunity! Please feel free to share this opening with anyone who might be interested in being a new member for our community!

Looking for a family-friendly farm, cohousing, or intentional community

This might be a little hard to explain, but I’m going to try. I’m 28, Colombian-American, and I have a seven-year-old daughter. Our life is a little unconventional. I travel, my work is not a normal 9–5, and I’ve realized I don’t want to keep building our life around temporary housing, hired help, and having to recreate a support system everywhere we go. I keep wondering whether there is somewhere we could actually belong. Not necessarily an “intentional community” in the formal sense. It could be a farm, a group of families, cohousing, an intergenerational household, or something I don’t have the language for yet. What I want is for my daughter to grow up around people she really knows. Other children. Adults who become familiar and trusted over time. A place where people notice when someone needs help, where meals or childcare or work sometimes overlap naturally, and where community is more than everyone living near each other. And for myself, I want people I can actually think and build with. I care a lot about spirituality, inner work, land, education, caregiving, and learning how to live differently. But I also care about power and about whether the communities we create reproduce the same things we say we’re trying to get away from. I need to be around people who can acknowledge things like racism, class, gender and systemic inequality without becoming defensive or treating those conversations as inherently divisive. I’ve been developing some of my own thinking around all of this through a framework I call Conscious Colombia, Participating Wisely, and Contemporary Sādhana. A lot of it comes down to a question I keep returning to: how do we become people who can participate in community wisely, while also creating structures that remain accountable and open to correction? I don’t have a fixed location in mind and I’m not looking to rush into anything. I’m really just trying to find the people and places where this kind of life is already being attempted — imperfectly, seriously, in real life. If you’re building something like this, living in something like this, or even asking similar questions, I’d love to talk.
