A wise communitarian once said, the best thing about living in community is the people, and the worst thing about living in community is the people. And one of the places this shows up most is around governance.
Most of us have not spent much of our lives in cooperative systems & cultures, and we don’t magically know how to govern our communities in a collaborative way just by stepping into them. We bring in a lot of baggage along with our idealism. There’s a lot we need to learn and unlearn to do it well, particularly within a framework of equity and accessibility.
Sky (they/them) has spent over 25 years deeply embedded in the Intentional Communities Movement as an activist, organizer, consultant, and devoted communitarian. They have lived in seven different ICs and have visited over 130. Sky has served as Executive Director and on the Board of Directors for the Foundation for Intentional community, and worked with a variety of other movement-building organizations.
