A poem circulated during the COVID era that you may have seen challenged the assumption that we were all in the same boat. Instead, we are all in the same pandemic storm but very different boats due to our differing backgrounds, resrources, and privilege.
Similarly, while we all might arrive on a common shore when we reach a given community, we each arrive by very different means that have been influenced by many factors, including divergent class backgrounds.
Class dynamics are as sticky and historically challenging as race and gender dynamics, but there are fewer resources out there for individuals and groups who want to work on them. And economic relationships and systems can be one of the toughest nuts for communities to crack.
This workshop offers a non-judgmental environment to explore questions of economics and class and how they related to our efforts to build community and a sustainable, resilient world.
Yana has 25 years of cooperative living experience, including four community start-ups. She serves on the Board of the Foundation for Intentional Community, and as a trainer and consultant for progressive projects. Yana is co-author of The Cooperative Culture Handbook: A Social Change Manual to Dismantle Toxic Culture and Build Connection and author of Together Resilient: Building Community in the Age of Climate Disruption. She is the former Executive Director of both the Center for Sustainable and Cooperative Culture at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, and Commonomics USA. Her 2013 TEDx talk, Sustainable is Possible! kicked off an era for her as a public speaker and advocate for communities. She is a founding member of the Solidarity Collective, an income sharing community in Laramie, WY, and a host on the community’s podcast, Solidarity House.
Nothing pre-recorded here! When you sign-up for an event with FIC, you’ll have the opportunity to join a live session on Zoom with the event presenter/facilitator and other participants.
All our events are run on a sliding scale basis. Generous donations cover the costs for low-income attendees. FIC is committed to making our programs accessible to people of all walks of life.
You’ll receive the recording of your event to view for up to one month (unless otherwise noted). So don’t worry if you can’t attend a live session. Watch or listen whenever it is convenient for you.
