Heartwood Commons in Tulsa, OK is building a vibrant, progressive 55+ cohousing community in one of our country’s most livable cities. Tulsa features a small town feel with all the amenities of a larger city, and an affordable, low cost of living.

Our community is nestled on nearly 5 acres just one block from the Arkansas River with parks, recreation, shopping and health care amenities close by.

We are a group of friendly, engaged and proactive adults working together to create a welcoming community that values connection and sustainability, acceptance and diversity, health and wellness, and fun and support. Some of us are single, some married, some working, some retired. We come from many backgrounds and professions. Our common denominator is that we all share a desire to live in a neighborhood that fosters an active and supportive community lifestyle.

We have the right team in place to help us create our vision. Cohousing expert Katie McCamant is our development consultant. Local sustainable design expert, Molly Jones of Jones Design Studio and experienced cohousing architect Bryan Bowen of Boulder Colorado are working with us hand-in-hand to get our community designed and built.

Our community, located at 7141 South Quincy Avenue in Tulsa, features 36 right-sized, energy efficient homes, a common house and many desirable shared amenities and features – all designed to promote a healthy lifestyle, accessibility, and social connections for successful aging in place.

Our private homes are all single story with no steps and feature an energy efficient deign that will use geothermal energy. Each home features an open floor plan with large windows for abundant light, quality kitchen design and finishes, energy efficient appliances, accessible bathrooms, generous storage, large front and back porches for outdoor living and a hardened bathroom for storm protection. Walking paths connect neighbors to one another, the common house and other community amenities.

Our large, bright and open common house overlooks our tree-filled common area and will comfortably accommodate frequent shared meals, large and small group gatherings for activities and celebrations, guest accommodations, and creative expression. Features include a gourmet cooking kitchen and great hall, 2 guest suites, an artist studio, a cozy living room and library, laundry, and a large partially screened-porch.

Other planned amenities include a well-equipped workshop and tool lending library, community gardens, greenhouse, Monarch way station, a dog park, hot tub, and fire pit, a separate contemplative space for yoga, meditation and self-reflection, and garages/carports. State-of-the-art exercise facilities are close by for a very reasonable fee and nearby trails and parks offer year-round access.

Community living at Heartwood Commons will provide a lifestyle with less impact on the environment. Our homes and common house are being built for energy-efficiency and health and use geothermal energy. Our team approach to getting the work done makes life more fun, saves time and money, and strengthens our community network. We’ve adopted consensus decision making as a way to include all voices as we develop solutions that everyone can support.
