What we do

“I came looking for an understanding of you and came out understanding myself. Thank you so much for the conversation, the spaces wide open and all that lies in between. (You) gave me a sense of timelessness, and with that a precious glimpse into the person I forgot I was and have always been.”
Corrine
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Left original information on here for historical/herstorical purposes since we were a bustling ‘intentional community’ for quite awhile (& still do sometimes welcome prearranged visitors or long-termers from time to time)…but rather than prioritizing people these days, just FYI: our focus is mostly on being a ‘wild nature sanctuary’ that respects/nurtures the ability of the land to heal with the Divinely Feminine Compassion so needed everywhere on Planet Earth at this time.
While the original Founder does occasionally welcome new or old friends &/or Mystery School collaborations, reality here is now more about sweet interactions with the land — spiced with occasional one-on-one human interactions of depth — rather than all the busy personalities & activities we used to juggle years ago.
So, if you’re looking for sweet support towards furthering creative world work…ways to deepen a spiritual practice…learn new spirit skills…study the mystical/alchemical arts long-term…receive tailored support around current transformations…or maybe just a bit more time to BE in aetheric contact with like-hearted others, some form of prearranged connection could be lovely. Check out our current web presence to see exactly what kinds of experiences we are offering at the moment & what types of interactions we’re open to…and reach out if what you find there feels like a good fit: http://kulanagoddesssanctuary.blogspot.com.
Longer-term studies + partial-work-exchange experiences have in the past been offered, and may at some point be so again. Inquire.
In general , when open to connecting with new folk, the focus these days is usually on sharing sacred time/space in island-wide &/or long distance-remote mystery-school interactions which are scheduled in support of our overall priorities towards re-balancing/re-patterning the Matrix while continuing to support this unconventional, contemplative, substance-use (smoke/alcohol/drug)-FREE, laid-back, creative environment that embodies eco-friendly, low-impact sustainability in a tropical rain forest kept intentionally unconquered.
A fact of Life here on Planet Earth is: what people support is what continues to exist.
Therefore, thanks so much for your interest…+ monetary expressions of appreciation or other types of support from those who have been here & those who have not.
It is sincerely appreciated. :)
The primary questions we always hear are: HOW did you originally DO it…& what’s happening at Kulana NOW?
In brief, we continue holding a stable center in these rockin’ & rollin’ times, with an expanded sense of doing our part towards co-creating World Peace.
Sample visitor comment: Kulana = “A refuge of sanity. Swedish fish & board games & extension ladders & mile markers & bananas & turtles…the American experiment continues.” Bef & Jen, writers, students

where such questions are answered in photo-illustrated depth. Part true life stories from our Kulana Artist/Goddess Sanctuary adventures, part Operations Manual on how to create sustainable, drama-free community in this day & age (which, as anyone who has lived in intentional community for any lengthy of time can tell you, is no small feat!), it’s available in color hardcover, paperback, + e-edition, & b/w trade paperback.
What a fun — & somewhat breathtaking! — stroll down memory lane creating this book was.
If you’d like to hear more about our adventures in co-creating & living Intentional Community throughout the years (including how we handled money, magic, love, forgiveness, being ‘pono’ with integrity here in Hawaii), please check out this — + other — books that Kulana’s Founder & friends have been busy seeding into the world.

But here’s a quick disclaimer for anyone hoping our community-related material will be a juicy tell-all that names names: it won’t.
In respect for people’s privacy, in the community book we delve into the dilemmas + lessons shared and explored throughout Kulana’s eras “doing community,” rather than churning through specific interpersonal dramas.
For readers who might like a more explicit look at precisely how relational conundrums can & do unfold…take hold…and sometimes explode within intentional communities of one kind or another, however, those sorts of stories can be found within the ‘Gathering The Dreamcatchers’ series of companion fiction instead. Most specifically:
* Paradise Found (https://www.amazon.com/Paradise-Found-Gathering-Dreamcatchers-Novel-ebook/dp/B07DS7FGVZ/), a novel about folks trying to create a true sense of home & community, all while endeavoring to change the world & navigate friendship, love, sexuality, personal growth, + the challenges Fate can throw everyone’s way…(can you relate?!) ;)
along with the books that directly precede & succeed that novel:
* Esoterica (https://www.amazon.com/Esoterica-Gathering-Dreamcatchers-Book-3-ebook/dp/B01HUJFFL2),
* Action: The Future Is Here (https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/action-cristina-salat/1142656388), and
* Living In Light (https://www.lulu.com/shop/cristina-salat/living-in-light/paperback/product-kz4y7v.html, https://books2read.com/u/3yWWYJ).
(As we’re sure anyone can guess, it is much kinder to examine detailed real & imagined intricacies of potential complications, choices, + human/community mistakes in the guise of carefully crafted fiction, rather than within a non-fiction volume of personal intentional community reminiscences/operational ‘how to’s’!)
Feel free to reach out with thoughts about what resonates with or is different from your own community experiences.
We love comparing notes!
2018 Update: There is new lava activity on the island & it is intense & beautiful…but it is NOT anywhere near us, thank goodness! Our land, kitties, air quality, etc. all continue to be just fine.
2021 Update: Still happy to hear from & discuss the possibility of welcoming new people to this magical, unconventional place, but at this time pretty much assessing things on a case-by-case basis due to current world events.
2023 Update: As noted, rather than prioritizing people our focus these days is mostly on being a ‘wild nature sanctuary’ that respects/nurtures the land, with attention shifted towards sharing sacred time/space in island-wide + long distance-remote mystery-school interactions instead. 37-Acre Sanctuary for Community, Homesteading and Off-Grid Living

Imagine waking to birdsong, mist rising over open meadows, and sunlight filtering through towering cedars. Picture a place where you can gather with community around a fire, cultivate food from rich living soil, steward a thriving ecosystem, and build a life rooted in connection, resilience, and purpose. Welcome to Heartwood Homestead — a remarkable 37-acre land project in Washington’s South Sound region that offers a rare combination of established off-grid infrastructure, development potential, ecological abundance, and accessibility. Whether you’re dreaming of creating an intentional community, regenerative farm, eco-village, healing retreat center, artist sanctuary, educational land project, family compound, or simply a private homestead with room to grow, Heartwood Homestead provides an extraordinary foundation to bring that vision to life. A Property Designed for Possibility Finding land is easy. Finding land that already has the infrastructure, water systems, power generation, multiple dwellings, community spaces, and zoning flexibility needed for a larger vision is exceptionally rare. Heartwood Homestead has spent years evolving into a functioning land project. Much of the difficult and expensive groundwork has already been completed, allowing new stewards to focus on creating rather than merely building. The property is zoned RR1/5, allowing for up to seven homes plus ADUs, creating significant potential for cooperative ownership structures, multi-family living, intentional community development, rental income, retreat accommodations, or phased expansion. For those seeking a community-oriented property, this is one of the most compelling opportunities available in the Pacific Northwest. Water Security and Off-Grid Resilience One of the greatest challenges facing many rural properties is water access. Heartwood Homestead shines in this regard. A brand-new 21 ga

Turn-key commune opportunity on 30 acres in beautiful rural Minnesota (~$500-550k)

Hi everyone! Our founding group of queer women is transitioning ownership of our rural Minnesota homestead, and we’re looking for new stewards to keep it running as an intentional community! Let me give you a tiny window into what to expect: Picture yourself stepping out of the overwhelming corporate chaos of the city, into an idyllic little slice of a slower life – there’s a certain look of relief we tend to see on our visitors’ faces. When you enter, the path is surrounded by vibrant flowers in every color that come back every year. To your left is a stone path to the organic gardens, growing easily without much effort. Straight ahead are the barns and pathways to the fields – you might pass by the occasional honeybee or butterfly. To the right is a large farmhouse, behind which there is a mossy forested area where you’ll find a conversation circle fashioned out of old logs and stones, and a small sitting platform up in the trees.    The Highlights: 30 Acres: Forest, pond, creek, permaculture gardens (Hügelkultur), native plants, perennial flowers and future fruit trees, and ~1 acre dry-farmed. 9-Bedroom Farmhouse: ~4,000 sq ft across 3 levels. Solid heating, great bones, in good shape, quiet layout. Outbuildings: Garage, woodshop barn, event barn, quonset storage, a silo, plus honeybees & resident farm cat! Location: Quiet and peaceful. Remote with off-the-grid features like a well and pending solar installation, yet under 10 mins to hospital/town. Zero flood/fire risk, and a wonderfully welcoming, queer-friendly local network.   Ideal for an established group of 2+ people ready to take on a relatively large farmhouse and property. We are open to an outright purchase or a gradual transition/shared-ownership arrangements with existing members. -> Full details, photos, and contact info here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ONZk-TUYQg3Xzh5Q7yl14PPeuwl5NYXu9ZDTgFGT4sY/edit?usp=sharing   Feel free to message me or share with anyone looking for land!
