Philadelphia Community Farm is a rural based intentional community and farm located on occupied land of Dakota, Anishinaabeg, and Ho-chunk Nations, along the St. Croix river valley.
We are a Volunteer run, Intergenerational, Multi-Abled, BIPOC & LGBTQ led and centered farm community and nonprofit 501(c)(3); committed to creating access for historically oppressed people to connect to their history through land, food systems & cultural practices.
We engage in leadership through a circle model in action, with farm residents, extended community members, and our Board of Directors.
Restoring health and vitality to people, plants, animals and the Earth has led this organization for over 30 years.
We believe in a four folding of economics, culture, land, and access. Through this lens it is possible, and imperative to reimagine conservation as a Whole Systems Network of practices with community at the center.
Together, we put the focus on:
Soil health in agriculture as a key element of land conservation.
Diversifying cultural practices on land.
Developing financially responsible enterprises.
Providing historically oppressed communities with access to wild & cultivated spaces.
Whether through our Agricultural, Educational, Life-Sharing, or Conservation programming, we infuse our work with vibrancy and dynamic growth.
We see it as our task to co-create an environment that fosters liberation; raising the next generation of Seed-Keepers, Environmental Stewards and Culture-Bearers.

We have an extensive onboarding process. This includes: 1. Reaching out to see if we currently have openings (or applying when we advertise openings). 2. When we do not have currently advertised openings we advise coming to open volunteer days to get to know the community. These are posted on our website as Activate-To-Relate and are held from Spring-Fall (roughly April – October) Bi-Monthly (every other month) on Saturdays. 3. After getting to know the community, we advise volunteering and spending time getting to know our descision making processes, community structure, and social norms. When an opening is available, you will be notified about the role we are specifically looking to fill. *see section below.
When we are seeking applicants for a specific role / position in the community we will market that on our website, Link.Tree, and here on IC.Org. 1. Applicants for open roles apply via a job description – This document contains the ways to apply. 2. 1st round interview (in-person or virtual) 3. second round interview (in-person or virtual). 4. 3 week trial visit 5. If accepted we require a 1 year training and orientation. 6. After 1 year, residents may be considered for Core Collective Membership

Power and responsibility are shared relatively equally among members.
PCF is governed by a Board of Directors, which act as a working board. All members of the residential community are directly involved with decision making. We are committed to a Process of Decolonization as described by Professor Poka Lenaui – Rediscovery & Recovery | Mourning | Dreaming | Commitment | Action. As we continue to take part in Regenerative Agricultural practices rooted in Indigenous and African knowledge, we are engaging in our own restoration and human liberation. Continuously reflecting and engaging in a process of decolonization rooted in Praxis and self-critical reflection, as described by Paulo Friere and Dr Alma Flor Ada. We believe there is a deep correlation between the health and wellbeing of the land and the health and wellbeing of humanity. We value Agricultural Systems as Conservation with Historical and Cultural Context.
Our Core Collective Membership is the leadership and decision making body for the day-to-day tasks of the community. We delineate power utilizing continued practice of the TEAL leadership model.
We acknowledge that group decision making takes time and commitment. We also acknowledge that time committed to the organization naturally creates an experiential and power differential. New community residents are often coming into a completely foreign way of life. It takes time to get acclimated; to understand and feel comfortable in a totally new knowledge base requires an openness to learn and listen to new ideas. We are continuously improving our training and on-boarding practices so that new residents can feel a level of solidity in their role and responsibilities. This is required to be able to be considered for leadership capacity.
Members contribute a percentage of income to community funds.
Labor: Yes (32 hrs/week)
We work together with you to build a situation that is equitable for all involved. Our homestead campus offers private bedrooms/living spaces, and a shared kitchen, dining room, living rooms, two full baths and one half bath. For more information, contact us directly.
