What we do

The Essence is a small conscious community built around one practice: stopping the argument with reality and seeing it as it is. We share stillness meditation, conscious movement, and daily life — cooking, raising children, running retreats — as one continuous practice, not separate activities. We are grounded in slow living, sharing plant-based gluten-free meals, and living close to nature. Life here is about being rather than doing.

The Essence exists to remind us of something humanity stopped teaching: how to actually sit with discomfort, communicate without blaming, and build the resilience to take full responsibility for our own experience. We call the bigger version of this The School of Happiness. These are foundational life skills, and we want to find a way to share them freely and at scale, for everyone who is ready to put them into use.

Our Essential Practices

At The Essence, we live each day as if it were our last, embracing simplicity and enriching our lives through presence and connection. Together, these practices reveal what we call the foundation — the basic human skills of awareness and honest relationship that most of us were never actually taught. We nurture the body, mind, and spirit with the following daily practices:

  • Meditation: Guided and silent sessions to deepen self-awareness and build resilience
  • Self-Inquiry and Awareness Practices: Explore beliefs and patterns that cause suffering, and learn how to inquire into and be free of them.
  • Communication Practice: Direct, honest, blame-free expression — saying what’s actually happening instead of managing how we come across.
  • Group discussions and mindful sharing after meditations and in the evenings.
  • Conscious Movement to reconnect with and strengthen the body:
    • Qi Gong
    • Yoga
    • Pranayama (breathwork)
    • Various connection exercises
  • Balance and energy-centered exercises

We are actively seeking co-founders, collaborators, and funders ready to build a permanent, multi-generational base for awareness.

Our Vision

The Essence envisions a permanent, multi-generational home for the practice of awareness — a place where presence, honest communication, and full responsibility for one’s own experience are simply how life is lived.

Our Mission

The Essence teaches people how to actually sit with discomfort, communicate without blaming, and take full responsibility for their own experience — foundational life skills most of us were never taught. We do this daily, together: through stillness meditation, conscious movement, honest communication, and ordinary shared life, guided directly by Chi Om, the community’s founder. We share what we learn freely, at scale, with everyone ready to put it into use.

Educational and retreat offerings

In-person, in our space outside Tulum, Mexico:

  • A Four-Day Stay (4 days, 3 nights) — a real taste of intentional living: the same daily rhythm the community lives by (dawn meditation, morning teaching, movement, shared meals, evening Qigong, satsang), plus one private session with Chi. Built as an honest introduction, not a pitch to stay longer.
  • Face Yourself, our 10-Day Retreat — a full digital detox: no phone, no screens, structured daily practice, vegan gluten-free meals with intermittent fasting, and one private hour with Chi. Built to make you face yourself, not just feel good.
  • A Month With Us — our deepest offering: a full residential month living inside the community’s daily structure, with ongoing personal guidance from Chi, a prep call before you arrive, and monthly support calls for three months after you leave.

Online, wherever you are:

  • The One Problem Call — a free 15-minute session where Chi works one real problem with you live. You get a recording and a personalized practice plan the same day — our lowest-barrier way to experience his guidance directly.
  • The Shift — Chi’s 4-week, one-on-one mentoring program: weekly live sessions built entirely around what you bring, plus a personalized written plan after each one to carry the work forward between calls.

Across all of it, the throughline is the same: direct, honest guidance from Chi, grounded in daily practice rather than theory. This is what we’re building toward as a wider School of Happiness — teaching the foundational life skills of awareness and honest communication, freely and at scale.

Looking for a family-friendly farm, cohousing, or intentional community

This might be a little hard to explain, but I’m going to try. I’m 28, Colombian-American, and I have a seven-year-old daughter. Our life is a little unconventional. I travel, my work is not a normal 9–5, and I’ve realized I don’t want to keep building our life around temporary housing, hired help, and having to recreate a support system everywhere we go. I keep wondering whether there is somewhere we could actually belong. Not necessarily an “intentional community” in the formal sense. It could be a farm, a group of families, cohousing, an intergenerational household, or something I don’t have the language for yet. What I want is for my daughter to grow up around people she really knows. Other children. Adults who become familiar and trusted over time. A place where people notice when someone needs help, where meals or childcare or work sometimes overlap naturally, and where community is more than everyone living near each other. And for myself, I want people I can actually think and build with. I care a lot about spirituality, inner work, land, education, caregiving, and learning how to live differently. But I also care about power and about whether the communities we create reproduce the same things we say we’re trying to get away from. I need to be around people who can acknowledge things like racism, class, gender and systemic inequality without becoming defensive or treating those conversations as inherently divisive. I’ve been developing some of my own thinking around all of this through a framework I call Conscious Colombia, Participating Wisely, and Contemporary Sādhana. A lot of it comes down to a question I keep returning to: how do we become people who can participate in community wisely, while also creating structures that remain accountable and open to correction? I don’t have a fixed location in mind and I’m not looking to rush into anything. I’m really just trying to find the people and places where this kind of life is already being attempted — imperfectly, seriously, in real life. If you’re building something like this, living in something like this, or even asking similar questions, I’d love to talk.
