Greetings! This is a unique community we envision creating that particularly welcomes seniors (55+) although is open to all folks, young and old, who are currently and likely have been long-term vegans or vegetarians. As such, you are deeply committed to the practice of not consuming fellow animals (ahimsa: respect for all living creatures) and desire to live amongst other who also enjoy this lifestyle.
We envision fifteen (or more; yet ideally at least ten) of us collectively purchasing a plot of semi-rural, forested land in southern Vermont (or elsewhere, see below.) Each prospective member will contribute funds to acquire and own land in fee simple as a community land trust [“CLT”]. Our individual homes will consist primarily of simple structures: tiny homes and cabins. In addition, we’ll create community-gathering space to accommodate musical events, presentations, food prep, socializing, scrabble/board games, yoga classes and the like.
While we will encourage gardening, we foresee having no requirement for agricultural or other labor contribution, apart from the rotating chore of maintaining a clean community house and volunteering to cook a tri-weekly (more or less frequently as the group decides) group dinner. A pooled monthly fund allotted for group activity including group meals as well as for community maintenance will be maintained as need requires.
This community is ideal for those who love their solitude in compact space yet also understand the profound value of living amongst a surrounding community of like-minded souls. No leaders; no followers; egalitarian decision-making, care and kindness will be our guiding principles.
Your ideas are welcome! We aren’t solely committed to the purchase of land in southern Vermont; other locations are under consideration. We are obviously at the seed stage of an innovative, germinating idea; having never before seen a veg-only community in the USA. So if you resonate with this concept and are able to contribute to a CLT, we look forward to hearing from you.
Note that the individual buy-in amount for the CLT will depend on how many of us come together to purchase land, as well as where that land is located. Yet the buy-in is envisioned to be, with a minimum of ten members, in the ballpark amount of 30K per member.
Ahimsa! Growing older — wiser — together, supporting each other in the joy, challenges and quotidian pleasures of this stage of our lives.
