This event is a part of the Liberation Learning Series which runs bi-weekly on Tuesdays from June 10 to September 30, 2025.

Join author and co-founder of the Wellspring Cooperative, Emily Kawano, in an interactive presentation where we learn to reimagine an economic framework grounded in solidarity, democracy, equity, sustainability, and pluralism.

About the event

You may have heard the quote attributed to Fredric Jameson and Slavoj Žižek: “It is easier to imagine the end of the world than the end of capitalism,” which describes how our economic system is so deeply engrained into our culture, that it can be easy for many to view capitalism as a permanent fixture in our global systems.

In this interactive webinar, Emily will introduce the concept of Solidarity Economy and the ways it is being put to use now on a local and global scale. Together we will not only imagine but articulate an economic system beyond extractive and hyper-individualistic culture with the support of real world examples.

In this session, you will:

  • Learn about real world examples where communities are adopting alternative economic models that put people and planet first
  • Learn to identify the ways in which our current economic systems show up in our ways of thinking, being, and relating on a micro and macro scale
  • Identify practical alternatives and ways of practicing Solidarity Economy that you can put to use today

Emily Kawano is a founder of the U.S. Solidarity Economy Network, served on the RIPESS Board for 8 years, and co-directs Wellspring Cooperative. The Wellspring Cooperative Corporation seeks to create an engine for new, community-based job creation in Springfield, Massachusetts. Wellspring’s goal is to use anchor institution purchases to create a network of worker-owned businesses located in the inner city that will provide job training and entry-level jobs to unemployed and underemployed residents through worker-owned cooperatives. Kawano also serves as Coordinator of the United States Solidarity Economy Network. An economist by training, Kawano served as the Director of the Center for Popular Economics from 2004 to 2013. Prior to that, Kawano taught economics at Smith College, worked as the National Economic Justice Representative for the American Friends Service Committee and, in Northern Ireland, founded a popular economics program with the Irish Congress of Trade Unions. She has a PhD in economics from UMass, Amherst where she joined the Center for Popular Economics and served as director for nine years.
