Owen (1771 – 1858) was a welsh social reformer, utopian socialist and one of the founders of the co-operative movement. In 1825, one of his followers, Abram Combe, started a community at Orbiston, near Glasgow. The following year, Owen himself started the community of New Harmony in Indiana, USA. Both of the communities lasted for about two years.
