„In a mass marketing culture, a revolutionary song is any song you choose to sing yourself.“

Utah Phillips – “Making Speech Free” – Recorded May 7th 1999, San Francisco.

Singing and making music together brings people together. However, for most people nowadays songs and music are something to be consumed rather than to be performed. The decline of many traditional cultures, village communities and extended families during and following the industrial revolution has, to a great extent, lead to the disappearance of the social frameworks where people sang and made music together.

Many intentional communities consciously go against this trend, including time and space in their structures for communal music making and song.

In addition, many music groups in the last fifty years have attempted to extend their shared music making into communal life.

This category exists to reflect both these aspects of community music.
