Job Description

The Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC) is seeking an experienced technologist to join the team as our Lead Developer. This is an opportunity to serve the intentional communities movement and directly help to create a more cooperative, just, and regenerative world.

As Lead Developer, you’ll work on the technical aspects of our WordPress website, including our online Communities Directory, e-commerce store, donations systems, online courses, marketing and analytics systems, and discussion space. The ideal candidate is comfortable working within a collaborative mission-oriented team, and has extensive experience in taking and implementing decisions towards best practices in both front and backend WordPress development.

You’ll work closely with our IT Director, who oversees team operations, manages planning, and handles wider organization communications. Your focus will be to together with the team implement new aspects of and maintain our existing technical infrastructure.

Job Qualifications

Commitment: 80 hours/month, first month trial period

Compensation: Starting at $20/hr and increasing based on performance, contracted

Location: Remote position. Candidates must be in a time zone compatible with attending meetings during business hours in North American time zones.

Key Areas of Responsibility

Development & architecture

  • Defining needed technical actions in regards to the FIC’s websites and IT systems, in collaboration with the IT Director and other IT staff
  • Architecture and lead development for custom themes and plugins for FIC sites
  • Backend development for the intentional communities directory

Maintenance & troubleshooting

  • Contributing to selection, maintenance and troubleshooting of 3rd party plugins and other software to support the growing needs of the FIC’s programs and staff
  • Handling errors and outages, including availability for emergency troubleshooting
  • Management of code repositories, deployment processes, and server infrastructure

Support & communications

  • Collaborate closely with the IT Director – they steer the ship, you run the engine.
  • Working with FIC’s partners to provide data exports and explore opportunities for technical collaboration.

Desired Skills and Experience

  • 3+ years experience managing complex WordPress-based websites
  • Significant LAMP stack development, administration and management experience
  • Excellent knowledge of WordPress plugins and theme development, PHP, HTML, Sass
  • Good knowledge of React
  • Experience with deployment tools
  • Educational background in a technical field is an asset
  • Excellent English verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize and meet deadlines and project schedules, and manage resources to serve the needs of the organization
  • Familiarity with the intentional communities movement and FIC’s mission/work preferred but not required
  • Commitment to diversity and equity work, as well as willingness to participate in organization trainings related to such work
  • Experience working in a cooperative environment, whether in a worker-owned cooperative, non-profit organization, teal or agile business,  or residential intentional community
