Juniper Hill Commons. Friendly City. Connected Neighbors. Sustainable Neighborhood.

Forming Communities
Harrisonburg, VA

We are building a multigenerational cohousing community on the outskirts of Harrisonburg, VA, aptly named “The Friendly City”. Our land has an exurban vibe with an eclectic panorama – turn in a circle and you can see at some distance a golf course, elementary school, cows, a few other houses. Yet the revitalized downtown, the wonderful co-op, and outstanding farmer’s market are all less than a 3 mile bike ride away.

We’ll have 27 energy-efficient homes in various configurations – stacked flats, townhomes, duplexes, alongside the existing small farmhouse. The homes are clustered in the property’s front 3 acres, to foster social interaction and to allow the rest of our 5½ acres to remain as greenspace. Our shared areas include the common house, workshop, gardens, children’s play space, and even some edible landscaping. There are several homes remaining, with estimated base prices between $300,000 and $500,000.

Harrisonburg is in a refugee resettlement area and so the town is quite culturally diverse, with a welcoming and tolerant ethos. Our membership reflects this as well. Yet we do hail from all over – roughly half our membership is from outside the Shenandoah Valley. We are toddlers to elders, families, singles, and couples, with a variety of languages, ethnicity, professions, and so, so many talents and skills. For instance, we have an actual garage band who entertains us when we gather on our property to play, create, and make connections. We have taken to heart the advice of cohousing experts – build community first.

Harrisonburg has the traffic, hospitality, and livability of a town with the amenities of a city. James Madison University has a Lifelong Learning program to engage the agile mind. There’s a lovely arboretum to stroll, rivers to float or paddle, eateries that are foodie-worthy, farm-to-table, and multi-ethnic, yet you can also get a bangin’ burger and brewski. And lest we forget, the Shenandoah Valley is surrounded by the glorious Blue Ridge Mountains, with all the hiking, cycling, climbing, and views you could ever ask for. Beautiful in every season.
