Documentary Photographer Looking for Communities to Work With:
My name is Catherine Nicholson, I am a BFA Photography student in my Junior year at SUNY New Paltz. I am beginning work on my thesis project, a two year study of intentional living communities located in the New York tristate area.
Through this project I will be exploring and documenting intentional living communities focused on religion, spirituality, art, and the environment.
My goal for this project is to explore the ways in which communities form around shared beliefs, how communities adapt to the needs of their members, and offer a glimpse into these communities beyond the pre-conceived notions about non-traditional living situations in the US.
For this project, I plan on making multiple visits to the different communities over the next two years in order to build a working relationship with the different members of the community. As well as so I can have a deeper understanding of what it is that these groups do, and am able to accurately portray them in my work. During these visits I would be traveling with one other person to help me with equipment. We would either come for the day, or overnight if there was accomodation available for us.
I plan on using a medium format camera, with color film. I am choosing this medium because it will allow for higher resolution photos than a 35mm camera, and will also give a larger range in options for print sizes when I am preparing for my thesis show. In addition to the photographs, if members of the different communities are comfortable with it, I would love to do recorded interviews with different members to further my understanding of the groups.
For compensation for this project I would provide digital files as well as prints of the images I take for use on your website, social media, or just to have.
If you are interested in working with me I would love it if you reach out!
