  • Full Circle Farms

FULL CIRCLE FARM is transforming into FULL CIRCLE FARMS - Lesbian Neighborhood

Full Circle Farms is located 30 minutes Southwest of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Lynn Hicks has teamed up with Doreen and Beth and we have created some homestead sites to sell to like minded lesbians - women interested in living lightly on the land, organic farming, kindness to animals, having fun, etc... The idea is to create a lesbian neighborhood community in the country. Each lot will be privately owned but we'd like to share tools, maybe appliances, etc..- if that is what women would like to do.

We have 6 lots for sale ranging from 4 to 10 acres. All lots have a mix of organic fields and trees, except one 10-acre lot that is all wooded. Lynn is retaining 50 acres as a wooded preserve with a pond and trails. We also have covenants written to protect the land and the aesthetics of the community and maintain ownership by lesbians. The land is priced below market value to encourage woman of many financial backgrounds to come live on the land.

Please send an email to LCLiving@aol.com or call Lynn at 919-742-5959.

  • Nasalam

The vision that inspired the founding of the community of Nasalam is in some ways a complex one. It includes the image of a spiritual community much like the ashrams of India or the monasteries of medieval Europe where men and women are able to live quiet lives dedicated to the pursuit of spiritual goals. Another part of the vision sees Nasalam as a place where people can find refuge when they need to retreat from the affairs of the world and seek rest and spiritual guidance. Nasalam is also a place for healing, where the wisdom of our ancestors is brought to bear on the many ills brought about by modern lifestyles. And, finally, Nasalam is a place where a vision of radical spiritual manifestation will be offered to humanity as a guide to realizing its potential and beginning a New Age in human history.

It would seem that to create such a spiritual community along traditional lines would be challenge enough, but to add to the complexity Nasalam is also a tantric community. Tantra is a term that covers many different beliefs and practices, but the most common use of the term in the West is with reference to certain sexual practices. Tantra has focused on developing sexual techniques because it is the strongest natural force we have at our disposal and it makes more sense to work with that force than to oppose it. Sex is the source of all life and anyone interested in maximizing life must also be interested in understanding sexual energy. As a tantric community a primary practice expected of all members is same-sex erotic massage, and experience shows that only queer people open to this kind of energy exchange.

To understand something of the spiritual work we hope to accomplish please go to our website and read the articles taken from our quarterly journal. We are a rather unique combination of sexuality and spirituality and desire to connect with others interested in this path promoting a New Age consciousness.

  • Susan B Anthony Memorial Unrest Home Women's Land Trust

EXPLORING SuBAMUH - This women's intentional living and educational community goes by the initials of SuBAMUH (pronounced Suh Bam' Uh). It has 3 purposes - to:

    1. Provide feminist and ecological education for women - workshops, special events, skills learning;
    2. Offer safe and economical space for women to live - short term stays, exploring membership and full residential membership;
    3. Make available safe rest and recreation space for women - camping for individuals and group events, day use of land, retreats

The 151 acres is owned by the trust, with residents having a lease for their particular dwelling and adjoining area. Leases give the feel and many of the privileges of ownership. 5 women and a toddler currently reside on the land.

Each resident is responsible to bring or build her own dwelling. Transitional housing is available in the farmhouse for women exploring the possibilities of living on the land or short term internships. There is also a cabin available for summer visitors.

Each resident pays for all of her own expenses and supports herself financially, as well as paying a shared-expenses fee ($60) each month. All residents also share the community work and serve as staff for the programs SuBAMUH sponsors. SuBAMUH is flexible on meat eating/vegetarianism, raising farm animals, occasional male visitors. No guns are allowed. SuBAMUH expects women to be physically and emotionally healthy, and not currently addicted to drugs or alcohol.

Women exploring intentional community can ask for provisional member- ship. One year residency is required for full residential membership. Women are not required to make a lifetime commitment.

Educational events sponsored by the land trust and open to all women have included: Practical Skills for Women, Permaculture, Exploring Community, Building Skills, Aging and Ageism, Challenging White Supremacy; Nature and Arts Retreat.

In addition the local women's community is often invited to events on the land such as our Winter Solstice gathering, women's spirituality discussion, and occasional work days. Outside groups use the land for events they organize, including the Pilgrim Warrior Women's Empowerment training, weekend retreats of Women's Outreach for Women (recovering alcohol/drug abuse group from Columbus, OH), etc.

It is not uncommon for women to take an extended period of time to consider living in community with other women. We are glad to accompany you on that journey through correspondence, written materials and personal visits.

    Short Mountain

Short Mountain Sanctuary is an intentional faerie community nestled deep in the lush wooded hills of middle Tennessee. Currently living on the land are fifteen resident stewards (one woman and fourteen men) and several long-term visitors.

We are a collective providing safe space for queer folk of diverse descriptions. As a community we strive to live lightly on the land and to maintain an environment which is open, free and stimulating to each person's growth and creativity. We are anti-authoritarian and make decisions by consensus at our weekly family meetings.

The residents get water from a spring, use an outhouse and heat with woodstoves. Some of the living spaces are lit only by candles and kerosene lamps. There is some sun-generated electricity in the main buildings, which includes a much added onto log cabin which serves as kitchen, dining area, library, common space and housing for two residents. Others live in a variety of homemade structures housing one to four people each.

A herd of goats supplies milk from which is made cheese, yogurt and ice cream. Chickens supply eggs and there are dogs, cats and many wild animals such as deer. We grow much of the food we eat, as well as culinary and medicinal herbs and flowers.

We publish a quarterly magazine, RFD: A Country Journal for Queer Folk Everywhere, and host two ten-day faerie gatherings in May and October.

Short Mountain has existed in its current form since 1981 and now three other intentional communities have formed nearby in recent years.

We welcome visitors. Just write ahead to let us know you're coming. We recommend initial stays of up to one week during non-gathering times. We are open to longer visits and almost always have longer-term visitors but we like to take things one step at a time. We can talk about longer stays while you're here.

Spring, summer and fall are the best visiting times. Bring a tent. We ask $7 a day to help cover food costs though no one is turned away for lack of funds. A map can be mailed on request. No pets please.

    Starland

Starland is a retreat center and community located in Southern California's high desert region. Through our umbrella organization, Community Visions, we run a number of special interest groups and events, both atour retreat facility and at other locations.

Our community consists of full and part-time residents at Starland, as well as a large extended family. We generally promote polysexual and polyamorous lifestyles, erotic spirituality, clothing-optional events, freedom from substance abuse and having fun in a playful, child-like manner. We also serve as the Southern California Radical Faeries Sanctuary and hold regular faerie gatherings.

Starland is available to other groups as a site for gatherings, retreats and workshops. We are constantly growing and expanding our facility and community.

There are many possibilities for becoming part of our community, as a resident or non-resident member. Much of our construction is done by volunteers and we always welcome the creative efforts of anyone wishing to contribute to Starland's expansion.

Please contact us for more information or just to say hello. Steve Fuji, John Herriot, Gary Watkins and Milton Markey.

  • Abundant Dawn Community: - Creating a loving and sustainable culture

Our current members include, 5 monogamous heterosexual couples, (including three families) and 2 single folk. The attitude of the group is very inclusive. We plan to grow, possibly to 20 adult members plus kids. We are committed to dealing openly with conflict, and to considering carefully the impacts of our actions on this land and on the planet.

Clustering our homes allows us to leave much of the land undeveloped. Each cluster is small enough for all the members to sit in a room and make decisions together. Currently we have one cluster fairly complete, one cluster in progress, and another area suitable for a cluster that consists of community owned housing rented to folks who haven't built their own spaces yet. Each adult is responsible for their own expenses and a share of the community's expenses.

Many alternative-minded folks, homeschoolers, homesteaders, small communities, and organic growers live in this area. The old-timers are generally friendly and open.

  • Beacon Hill House

Since our formation in 1996, our goal has been to create a community of sustainable activism, an institution of liberation, and a fun, vibrant, nurturing home all wrapped up in one! We live in a 12-bedroom house, which is still partly under renovation. As of May 2000, our population is four adult members and several long-term guests. Our back yard has an organic garden with vegetables and fruit trees.

We are located within a culturally diverse neighborhood, walking distance from downtown and China town and a short bus ride from Capitol Hill, Seattle's vibrant business district known for celebrating gay, lesbian and alternative culture. While we do not currently have any gay or lesbian members, we welcome the possibility.

We share income together and most of us have paying jobs within the larger economy. We strive to balance our working lives with everything else that sustains us. In our spare time we volunteer for organizations and causes, enjoy visiting friends, celebrating, sharing meals, exploring natural places, and reading in sunny spots.

We embrace our core values of nonviolence, egalitarianism, social change, ecological sustainability and community through our actions and agreements. Our agreement to share all our income and equally value all work done for the benefit of the community is one aspect of our egalitarianism. Another is our consensus decision-making process. We practice and support nonviolence by prohibiting abusive behavior between members, striving to treat everyone with respect, and opposing violent actions in the wider world. We support social change work with donations of labor, money and our meeting and office space. We strive for ecological sustainability by evaluating our consumer choices. We support organic foods, not eat meat, use recycled building products, own an electric car, and promote bicycle riding. Our value of community is nurtured by sharing our lives together and by our membership in the Federation of Egalitarian Communities.

We enjoy meeting others who are seeking to create a liberated culture rich in compassion and cooperation. Contact us in advance to visit.

  • Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage, Rutledge, Missouri.

Our goal is to build a small town that is truly sustainable and socially responsible. Dancing Rabbit will be a large community with many different subcommunities, families and individuals that interact socially and economically. Our approximately dozen members are constructing off-the-grid, strawbale and cob homes on our 280 beautiful, rolling acres in northeast Missouri. One subcommunity is an income sharing FEC community called Skyhouse. We have a close working relationship with Sandhill Farm, a 23-year-old egalitarian community nearby.

Dancing Rabbit's only pre-requisites for membership is agreeing to the sustainability guidelines. The model of subcommunities allows social and cultural diversity among members. Several of the current members are queer and the community culture can be characterized as queer-positive.

  • Ganas

Ganas moved to NYC from San Francisco in 1978 with six people (all still here). We're now about 75 adults of varied ages, philosophies and ethnicities. Most of the Ganas population is heterosexual, but members are friendly to, and very welcoming of sexual diversity. We live in eight well maintained buildings with lovely gardens and good living space. In our five commercial buildings nearby, we recycle and resell furniture, clothing, household goods, art work and lots more. In April 1996 we bought a 54 room hotel with large campgrounds and outdoor concert facilities, an indoor stage and disco, a swimming pool, a small lake, and a stream - all on 72 acres about 100 miles north of NYC in the Catskill Mountains.

Eventually, the new project, called G.R.O.W. II (Group Realities Open Workshops), proposes to offer cultural programs, fitness and relaxation workshops, and a full retreat and conference center.

Our purpose (both at G.R.O.W. II and at Ganas) is learning to dialogue with emotional as well as conceptual truth, love and intelligence. Individual feedback is integral to our work, but rarely happens without specific consent, and sometimes not even then. Every day, at breakfast and dinner, about half of us are there to talk together about personal, work, and community issues, and to plan and decide things. This self selected group is strongly bonded, yet is unusually easy for newcomers to join.

Almost all activities are open to everyone, but involvement is entirely optional. About half of the people who live at Ganas don't opt to participate much in either our process or our goals. Everyone joins in discussion of problems that concern them directly. Some work outside the community and cover their expenses with cash. For the most part we all help each other with whatever, whenever possible. Conflicts arise but because we're in dialogue every day, they usually get quickly resolved.

Right now Ganas is seeking help with the NYC businesses. We also need good people to help with renovation and program development for G.R.O.W. II. We are open to helping a new community to develop in our country facility. Visitors are welcome for short or long stays at both facilities.

  • The Hermitage

The Hermitage at Mahantongo Spirit Garden is a sacred site and retreat center, a place where spirit and earth join together in harmony, healing and wholeness. As pantheists, we believe everything is alive and spirit. The spirits have spoken through us to write the Third Testament, the conclusion to the Judeo-Christian Bible by taking it into the post-Christian era. Visitors and guests of diverse sexualities and spiritual paths are welcome with advance notice if possible. Write for a free sample copy of our newsletter. • Satyr's Grotto

We are a rather eclectic group of gay men forming a monastery near El Paso, Texas. While we practice no collective dogma or doctrine we are accepting of any personal religious or spiritual practice that is considered constructive. We are also very accepting of people who do not consider themselves religious or spiritual, as long as they are accepting of other's personal beliefs. We have a sustainability plan for our community that includes established connections with local commerce. We are very active locally and are working hard to create a local reuse center that will reduce items being deposited in the local landfills. We are also working on a service and product bartering program. Another one of our industries is an assisted living facility for those who are ill or aging and need limited or short term care. We are looking for people of all walks of life, and despite being a predominantly male organization we are looking for women of all walks of life to participate. (We are definitely interested in including women!) We are in the begining stages of the process but we do own a 40 acre ranch and are expanding to 120 acres in the next two years.

  • Short Mountain

    Nasalam
