The Intentional Communities Web site is run mostly on volunteer labor. If you would like to help us with day-to-day tasks, or would like to take on special projects, please email us at ficweb@ic.org

Further information

Just as a primer, there are three of us that work on the web site: Charles, Jillian, and Elph. There are several folks that serve as advisors who patch into our email flow.

The three of us do the actual day to day work as well as long-range planning and development and communicating with others, etc. We do this without pay as volunteers of the Fellowship for Intentional Community.

Since we all can only do this in our spare time on evenings and weekends, when our paying jobs are done, of course there is more work than just the three of us could ever finish! And we want to involve more people in this work. Hence, more volunteers!

We have a number of tasks that can be taken on remotely and we have opportunities to shepherd and shape various growing sections of the site. Lots of possibilities.

To get started let us know what your skills are in relation to doing web work, and what skills you would like to gain and let us know what kind of computer setup you are using. Take a look at the list of possible tasks we've cobbled together below and let us know what you think about these items and any other fun stuff that you've thought of that could be done for the IC Web site!

Possible task areas for IC Web site volunteers:

  1. Typing or scanning articles from Communities magazine (CMag).
  2. [DONE] HTML rework of 30 Communities Directory (CDir) articles so that they match the new design.
  3. HTML rework of Communities magazine (Cmag) articles so that they match the rest of the site design.
  4. Updating Resources page. Pick an area of interest in our resources.html file and find appropriate links with an eye to those sites that collect links in the area. That is, it's better to link to sites that do links than to link to the individual sites. The former will more likely be there in 6 months and will have a link to the latter.
  5. Scour the web for intentional communities that we don't have on our iclist. There is a constant need for this.
  6. Proof a section of our website for broken links, slow loading, and aesthetics, etc.
  7. [DONE] Elph is obtaining a list of libraries that have the Cdir and we will need this put into delimited file format for addition to the web IC contact database.
  8. Snail mail addresses of iclist communities can be searched out (and other info), and put together in a form that will be easy to add to the iclist database.
  9. Chat events meta? Organize 'guest speakers' at announced times? Propose ways to maximize chat capacity.
  10. Research nonprofit 'donation on the web' models. Look at how other small nonprofits on the web are doing fundraising, tell us where they are so we can get in dialog with them.
  11. Newsletters/other printed matter: volunteers could contact newsletters of interest and ask if they'd like to be on the web, and then figure out how to do so. increase our online library.
  12. HTML coding of FIC products lists, such as tapes.
