We will meet at the site of Mary's City of David (the Israelite House of David, as reorganized by Mary Purnell in 1930) in Benton Harbor, Michigan, which is celebrating its centennial in 2003. The conference site is fascinating and will appeal to scholars, current communitarians, and the general public. deborah.altus@washburn.edu http://www.communalstudies.info Intentional Community Events Calendar http://www.ic.org/events/ FIC Sponsored Conferences and Events http://fic.ic.org/artofcmty.html ________________________________________________________________ 3 VISIONS OF UTOPIA VIDEO PROJECT UPDATE by Producer/Director Geoph Kozeny ________________________________________________________________ Greetings from the road! I've been caught up in my "normal" summer/fall routine (various annual commitments to co-op camps, communities conferences, and other projects to make the world a better place), and plan to return to the editing studio at The Farm on October 22nd. I'll be working there nearly nonstop through May 2004, focused primarily on the editing of tape #2. Hopefully that will be enough time to wrap it up, but if not, at least I'll have a bunch of new segments to share when I do presentations to chronicle and promote community. I'm happy to report that the video has been featured at about a half dozen small conferences and film festivals, and the reviews I've gotten back have been very positive and encouraging. A couple of cable access stations have also run segments of the video, again with popular feedback. If you have a local channel that you think might be interested, please get in touch via email to see if we can arrange a showing. In my recent visits to communities, I've been surprised to discover that most of them have heard good things about the video, yet very few have actually seen it. However, when they do finally see it, I hear great reviews. Not only are community residents interested in seeing what other communities are up to, many also pick up some ideas about tricks and tools that are useful in their own circumstances. Further, a few have discovered that it's a great resource for showing to prospective new members: by giving folks a glimpse of the many options and everyday lives in a variety of communities, the seekers are better able to understand and assess their own interests and needs--and thus make a more informed decision about whether or not the community they're exploring will be a good match. So it ends up saving time and effort for both the seekers and the communities. The Communal Studies Association will be honoring the video with its Outstanding Project Award at it's annual conference next month. Hopefully that will provide another effective way for the video to get some more publicity. Which is something the project really needs! If you can write and publish a review in your group's newsletter, or convince your local library to purchase a copy, or get ten friends to each chip in $3 to buy a copy for showing at an evening salon focused on community living--that would be very helpful and much appreciated. I'll be happy to provide some graphics if needed ...just send a request via email to geoph@ic.org. It's a great way to spread the idea of community!
