I dreamed about what it would be like to live in a unique, hand- made house, cabin or yurt. I later spent seven years living in a rustic, owner-built cabin in the Ozarks with my husband and teen- age son. It was an experience I wouldn't have missed and I got a chance to see some of my dreams realized. When I found out that Lloyd Kahn had published a sequel to Shelter, I was delighted to find that the dream was still alive in the era of cookie-cutter architecture and trophy houses. Home Work is a fascinating read and covers an amazing number of structures. There is a marvelous section of photographs of indigenous homes from around the world, an intriguing look at the work of Archilibre, a group of counter- cultural builders in the French Pyrenees, pictures and descriptions of old historic structures in the American West, a fun look at fantasy homes, and even a section about alternative homes on wheels. This is only a small sample of what is contained in this book. Interspersed with all the great photos is information on alternative building methods such as cob, strawbale, earth-bag and papercrete. There are schematic diagrams of some of the structures featured and resource information for those wanting to build their own dream. I really enjoyed the stories of the people who have put their hearts into their homes. I also appreciated the book's celebration of the use of indigenous, recycled, and innovative building materials. Sandwiched around the Saturday night party and benefit auction, we'll be doing the work of building the Communities Movement. Highlights of the expected agenda include 1-taking deep look at who we are, what will be needed in the next decade, and what the FIC is uniquely poised to deliver 2-reviewing the first 7 months of the online Communities Directory and progress on fundraising for the Directory Endowment, which will be the economic engine to keep it running 3-discussing plans for an organizational summit, where nonprofits sharing a core commitment to community would meet to explore collaboration and ways to leverage resources for maximum impact 4-taking a deep look at the role and financial prospects of Communities magazine, which functions in a world hungry for information about cooperative living, yet increasingly reluctant to buy periodicals.
