Making a Difference is the theme of the Winter 2007 issue of Communities magazine. This issue was mailed to subcribers in mid-December.

The authors of Messages give clear guidance to the importance of communication skills in groups, in the workplace, with friends, in the home, in relationships and elsewhere
 in our daily lives. They explore in depth the whole process including the message, the channel through which the message is conveyed, the receiver, feedback, the context of the communication and the barriers to effective transmittal of the message and ways to overcome these barriers.
I have been looking for a title to add to our catalog that covered communication skills in more depth. This one provides what I was looking for and more. There is excellent use of case studies to reinforce the points the authors are making.
I also appreciate the fact that they cover a large range of situations in which communication is vital, including some not usually covered in this kind of book. Among these are public speaking, interviewing, communicating with children and situations involving culture and gender. This excellent book should benefit everyone.

Of course there are lots of little things we each can do that will make a small change in our individual footprint, and those are good places to start. But we're realizing that we've reached a time when big changes are called for--and lots of them.
Are we up to it? Well, the good news is that many of the changes we need to make will also improve our quality of life. They don't mean more drudgery and boredom--they mean more companionship, support, freedom, and downright fun. I'm talking, of course, about joining our lives with other people: about community.
More and more people now understand that community and cooperation are a central part of the way forward to a healthier planet and a thriving society. Our communities are even getting positive coverage in places like USA Today and US News & World Report.
