The focus of this engaging, well-written book is strong and focused intentional communities that can bring out the best in individuals and allow them to blossom and bloom. The Findhorn Book of Community Living offers something for both the new community-seeker and the experienced communitarian. The author is a long-time community member and a well-known scholar of the communities movement. He gives some insight into his own quest for community and also provides an overview of the history of intentional communities. Dr. Metcalf does an excellent job of looking at the core values that animate community life. In-depth case studes of eleven communities around the world highlight how each deals with such issues as community decision- making, conflict, economic management, use of resources, gender relations, parenting and socialization. Guidance is also given for those who are considering community as a lifestyle, either by joining an existing one or forming a new group. A good selection of resources for community-seekers and communitarians rounds out the book. For the person new to community, I recommend The Findhorn Book of Community Living as one of the best introductions available. People experienced with group living will find in these pages a fascinating look at the world of intentional communities today. B. White once said, "I arise in the morning torn between a desire to save the world and a desire to savor the world. This makes it hard to plan the day." Like many of us faced with the same dilemma each morning, you can choose to improve the world in a way that also helps you (and many others) to savor it at the same time. Join the FIC! If you've already joined, donate! It's easy, it's fast, it gets you discounts and other benefits... but best of all, it's a way to both enjoy being part of a vast network of community-minded folks, and also enable the growth of that very network. So, don't fret over whether to improve the world or enjoy it--do both. Savor community living while bringing it to more people. Please join us.
