People have been sustained and uplifted for centuries by shared song -- in their work, their play, their worship and their struggles for dignity. Rise Up Singing struck a chord, so to speak, when it first appeared and has become the favorite songbook of many of us. The copies of the previous edition in my home have become worn though constant use and are always brought out when we have friends over for both casual get-togethers and holidays. The words and chords for many old favorites and new songs we want to try are readily available in a proven format. Songs are easy to locate: they appear in alphabetical order with chapter groupings like lullabies, love songs, sea songs and spirituals. The editors have taken a great book and made it even better, while still retaining much that made previous editions so wonderful. Rise Up Singing has been completely re-typeset to make it easier to read and a new feature is track icons to match the series of teaching tapes available to accompany the book. The marvelous illustrations by Kore Loy McWhirter still grace the pages and are an important part of the book's charm. Sandwiched around the Saturday night party and benefit auction, we'll be doing the work of building the Communities Movement. Highlights of the expected agenda include 1-taking deep look at who we are, what will be needed in the next decade, and what the FIC is uniquely poised to deliver 2-reviewing the first 7 months of the online Communities Directory and progress on fundraising for the Directory Endowment, which will be the economic engine to keep it running 3-discussing plans for an organizational summit, where nonprofits sharing a core commitment to community would meet to explore collaboration and ways to leverage resources for maximum impact 4-taking a deep look at the role and financial prospects of Communities magazine, which functions in a world hungry for information about cooperative living, yet increasingly reluctant to buy periodicals. NOT Labor Day weekend Twin Oaks Community near Louisa Virginia One of the things I love best about the Communities Conference at Twin Oaks is that it's the perfect opportunity to directly connect people who are looking for a community with communities who are looking for new members. There are generally representatives from about 20 different communities (eco- villages, co-ops, and more) who come to talk about their style of group living, and meet people who might be interested in their group. Other people are not necessarily looking for a community to live in, but are interested in learning more. There'll be the chance to find out about the "nitty-gritty" of community living at our workshops on group decision-making, sustainability, intentional relationships, group living skills, and more. And of course, the weekend wouldn't be complete without our Talent Show, swimming in the river, bathing in the mudpit, laying in a hammock with a new friend, and gettin' down at our dance party on Saturday night. The Conference is co-sponsored by the Fellowship for Intentional Community, the Federation of Egalitarian Communities and Twin Oaks Community.
