Ariel Gore brings us down-to-earth essays on the topics that 'regular' advice-laden motherhood guides gloss over -- sleeplessness, depression, weird pregnancy dreams, the restless hunger for creativity, guilt, isolation, the passionate love of children and much, much more. She writes thoughtfully and well, with humor and feistiness. Uplifting, empowering, moving AND fun to read. A must for all adults, regardless of their parental status. PS Mother's Day is Sunday, May 11th. PLUS: We are taking pre-publication orders for Creating a Life Together: Practical Tools to Grow an Ecovillage or Intentional Community by Diana Leafe Christian, our very own Communities Magazine's Editor. We'll carry it for the list price of $23.00 but if you pre-order we'll take 20% off the price, making it $18.40. Usual shipping charges apply. We are offering mugs in several sizes, plant pots with optional macrame hanger, and decorative beads. http://www.communitymade.com/products/twin-oaks-faces-4face- plant-pot-cmty.html. Stella is selling her individually made (no stock patterns) sculptures at prices comparable to stock hand-made pottery. We predict this unusual pricing won't last long. For the gardening season, communitymade.com also has on sale Acorn Tinnery's Six-Inch Planter ($17.50 on sale), which holds a 5-6 inch diameter pot. These are each cut freehand from a recycled tin can, and are available with red or natural finish. http://www.communitymade.com/products/acorn-planter-six-inch- cmty.html. We continue to be amazed by the extraordinary products made by communities and folks in community. More coming soon. We offer you the opportunity to learn about the FIC, make new friends, network with other community-minded people, and participate in the consensus process. We hope you will join us for any or all of the FIC's four days of Organizational Meetings at The Farm. Come and participate in the conversations we hope to inspire about creating a world where community is a viable option. What's on our plate this spring? *Events -- It has been a while since our last Community Day (Earthaven in May 2001), and we'll hear plans for an FIC Event, perhaps as soon as this fall in Ohio. *Budget -- We never have trouble thinking up projects; the trick is finding the funding to make everything happen. We'll be taking a close look at the numbers. *Development -- We'll take a look at the pluses and minuses of our first year of serious fundraising, assessing our potential for ongoing financial support beyond sales of products and services. *Board selection -- This spring four board members' terms will be expiring. The Nominating Cmtee will present a slate of candidates for three-year terms. *Communities Directory -- Last fall we tackled the burning issue of the book's future, and agreed in principle to offer future Directories online, as well as in print. We committed to launching a capital campaign to establish an endowment, the interest from which can fund the labor needed to develop and maintain the communities database. We will hear a detailed proposal on how this will work, and how it will coordinate with our website development. Location, Fees & Registration: We will be hosted by The Farm in Summertown, TN. To learn more about The Farm visit their websites at http://www.thefarmcommunity.com/ http://www.thefarm.org/ The fee is $25/day. This includes meals and camping. First meal will be Wednesday breakfast. Indoor beds are available in their dormitory for an additional $15/day. Also, some spaces in private homes will be an option on a first come first served basis. The deadline for registration is Friday May 16th.
