Enough Is Enough: Building a Sustainable
Economy in a World of Finite Resources
by Rob Dietz and Dan
O'Neill
Paperback, 2013; ISBN 978-1609948054;
5.8 x 9.2 inches; 240 Pages

If there is one concept I would love for everyone to
get behind it is the idea of a steady-state economy. That is,
one that is not growing.
This simple idea, readily grasped even by those without any background in economics,
is nontheless so powerful that it is taboo in US politics. If you are familiar
with the litany of things that need changing, you will be amazed at how nimbly
these authors tie together oversized multinational corporations, climate desabilization,
skyrocketing debt, and our declining quality of life with one grand-scale
frame shift in the way we think about growth.
The incredible thing about this book is that it takes issues we are already familiar
with, like pollution and unemployment and completely leaps over the tired old
red vs. blue debate about insignificant policy changes to vital solutions that
would really make a difference. It is thrilling because by redefinining progress,
the authors show that making changes to eliminate the cause of some problems
will also address the symptoms of other problems.
The whole thing boils down to improving people's quality of life, while ameliorating
climate change and the rest. This might be the most accesible, appealing,
radical book I've ever read. I've been interested in a steady-state economy
for years and have struggled to explain it to people, particularly the holistic
way it addresses such disparate issues.
Enough is Enough has chapters on inequality, global population,
materialism, unilateralism, debt, throughput, and more. If you have suspicions
that business as usual is not working for most people, you will be excited and
enlightened by this book!
