The 2012 Communities Conference is swiftly approaching!
Save a few bucks by registering today for what is sure to be the best celebration
of communal lifestyles and resource-sharing that we've hosted in recent years.
The "door price" of $100 for a camping ticket goes into effect on Aug. 24th―one week before the Conference―so this is your Last Chance to pre-register and get a discount. You could also sleep indoors this year at neighboring retreat center Sophia House. Reservations are still available but going quickly!
We'll be opening the conference Friday evening with a group
discussion inspired by the Occupy Movement, which took America by storm in 2011.
What are some lessons about working together and resisting the status quo that
we can take from Occupy? What do intentional communities, the Transition Town
movement, worker-owned cooperatives, resource-sharing groups and Occupy have
in common, and how can we all find common ground from which to build a better
world together?

Release your energy afterward with bonfire drumming
and "Five Element" & Danjeon breathing exercises hosted by Paula Damaskinos
and associates. Who knows, we may even throw in a Friday evening sweat lodge!
(There will definitely be a sweat Saturday morning, along with more Five Element
exercises and Danjeon breathing.)
As for workshops we've got lined up for the weekend...
- Permaculture in Community by Terry Lilley,
Shannon Farm Community member and permaculture enthusiast
- Value-based Consensus by Comparison by C.T.
Butler, activist and author of influential handbook On Conflict and Consensus
- Conscious Connections by Debby Sugarman, interpersonal
relationship expert. This was a very popular workshop last year!
- Starting and Maintaining a Worker-Owned Cooperative
by Joe Rinehart, worker/owner at Firestorm Cafe & Books in Asheville,
NC and member of the Democracy At Work Network. Panel discussion to follow.
- Activism and Service Communities. Panel discussion
featuring voices from Little Flower Catholic Worker Community and Innisfree
Village
- Transition Towns: Building a Better World
by Paula James, co-founder of Transition OurWay in Ouray County, Colorado.
Discussion with Joanie Freeman and Dave Redding of the Charlottesville Rabblerousers
to follow.
- Circles Make the World Go ’Round: Organizing
Your Community to Get Things Done. An introduction to sociocracy
with Sheella Mierson and Ron Czecholinski of The Sociocracy Consulting Group
- and more...from intentional community movers 'n' shakers such as Laird Schaub and Ira Wallace and on subjects ranging from resource-sharing cooperatives and communal gardening to spirituality in community!
We are also thrilled about two NEW additions to this
year's Conference, both happening on Monday, Sept. 3rd. The first is
an Occupy role-playing experience led by activists and communitarians
Paxus Calta (Twin Oaks Community) and Sara Tansey (Woodfolk House). Put your
newly-learned community-building skills to work in a fun, fast-paced environment!
Alternately, attend a day-long sociocracy intensive led by
Sheella Mierson, Ron Czecholinski and Ted Millich. If you’ve ever been
interested in bettering the communication style and decision-making method of
your community or organization, this intensive is for you.
The day-long workshop costs a small additional fee to conference attendees; the "door price" is a sliding scale fee of $30-$60, but if you register by August 15th, pay as low as $20! You will NEVER find a full-day sociocracy workshop for this low a price again. Don't miss out. (Note: if you can pay more than $60, it will help low-income people to attend.)
Do you know anyone who might be interested in Sociocracy―also known as "Dynamic Governance"―but not necessarily in intentional communities? Please help us spread the word that we're offering "non-conference attendee" tickets for the day-long workshop!
Please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions or suggestions, and we'll see you this Labor Day weekend!
