When A House Divided Is Still Good News
by Laird Schaub, Executive Secretary

FIC recently received a commitment from a long-time supporter (who wishes to remain anonymous), bequeathing half the equity in her house to FIC--the other half will be going to another nonprofit that provides an array of educational programs focused on sustainability. Not sure which organization to support more, she decided to split the pot. What a creative solution! Her only stipulation is that we make sure the next owner of the house respects all the work she's done to create sustainable landscaping on the FIC logo property. We were happy to comply with her wishes.

As the donor is only in her 50s, we don't expect to see any money from this bequest until decades down the road. Just like us, she has faith that we'll still be promoting community and cooperative living well into the future. Certainly the need will continue that long.

While this gift is good news for FIC in its own right, it's all the more impressive when you learn that the donor is not someone with gobs of money. She's just someone who lives within her means, has seen the value of her home increase steadily over the years, and wants to leave a legacy that will help make the world a better place. She's probably a lot like you.

As there's plenty to do to make the world a more cooperative place, FIC expects to be in this for the long haul. If you're inspired by this donor's example, maybe you too would like to set something aside for FIC, so that we can remain vibrant well into the future.
