2010 Slingshot! Organizer
4.25 inches X 5.5 inches; 176 page; Slingshot! pocket planner
Ever wonder what socially progressive history might have happened on your birthday? If your birthday happens to be today, did you know you share it with Nelson Mandela? Or race riots in Harlem in 1964?
If it happens to be May 17, that's the date of the first women's anti-slavery rally, in
1831. (Kind of nice to know that people have been doing care-filled and important things since before we were born, isn't it?) Nov. 26 can claim the birth of scrabble in 1948, which may not be politically momentous, but it sure matters to some of us on a dreary winter's day. Turns out, there's pretty much something interesting every day of the year.
How do I know such things? I've just been looking at this year's Slingshot! Organizer. For every day of the year, it has juicy tidbits from radical or progressive history that happened to land on that day.
And funny, my shelf at Community Bookshelf still has a few of these gems from 2010, along with a lovely little stack of 2010 We'Moon Calendars. While it may seem awfully late in the game to get the 2010, both are a lot more than just a place to jot your appointments, and this month, you can get them both at deep clearance discounts of 60% off the cover prices. For a student or teacher about to start the school year, these could be well-timed indeed.
The sassy little Slingshot! includes, among other things, a radical contact list, DIY bike touring guide, a fascinating little section called "Conspiracy Law and Being True to Yourself" (which essentially recommends following your intuition) a conversions chart and a menstrual tracking calendar… all in a funky art planner that fits into your pocket.

We'Moon 2010 Datebook

by Mother Tongue Ink
2009; 240 pages; 8" x 5 1/2 "; spiral bound paperback; ISBN: 978-1-890931-60-5
The gorgeous We'Moon features women's art and poetry, a full ephemeris (astrological cycles chart) for the year, and a poignant section about feminist women who have died in the last couple years commemorating their lives. I use last year's We'Moon for art projects, and find the images ideal for collage work.
