THE SENIOR COHOUSING HANDBOOK, 2ND EDITION:
A Community Approach to Independent Living
by Charles Durrett
2009; 320 pages; 9" x 8"; paperback; ISBN:0-86571-611-0

The concept of senior cohousing originated in Denmark and the first such housing complex was built 1987. The public response to this initiative was highly positive and in 1995 a comprehensive model for the creation of senior cohousing communities in Denmark was adopted. Inspired by this and the growth of the cohousing movement in other Senior Cohousingcountries and the United States, architect Charles Durrett wrote Senior Cohousing, the first in-depth guide for those interested in this type of community as a lifestyle. The new edition of this landmark book, titled The Senior Cohousing Handbook, has just been published.

Providing a proven, phase-by- phase methodology for creating senior cohousing and an inside look at existing senior cohousing communities, both here and abroad, the author has expanded his comprehensive handbook for seniors, housing professionals, designers, and anyone seeking appropriate housing alternatives for the dynamic older people of our time.

The text is again generously supplemented with excellent photographs showing the communities and their residents. One of the things that I really enjoyed about the first edition was the fact that many of the photos were of actual living spaces and other interiors and that people were shown pursuing normal inside and outside activities. There are also a number of excellent sketches and other illustrations that are used to reinforce points made in the text and space planning possibilities. Highly recommended for everyone interested in this subject.

CULTURE CHANGE: Civil Liberty, Peak Oil and the End of Empire
by Alexis Zeigler
2007; 136 pages; 9" x 6"; paperback

The down-sizing of the American lifestyle is, by all indicators, already well under way. It Culture Change appears that the "business as usual" model is not sustainable, even if the economy "improves" in the near term. The book Culture Change takes a searching look at the foundations of this model that we have operated under for many years and finds them unstable. Many of the problems in our society that we see as having purely political roots are strongly influenced by economic and ecological factors. All of these causes play important roles in our suddenly less than rock-solid world. The author traces the connections that are not at first obvious and challenges the reader's assumptions about how the world really works. Without this knowledge, deep solutions to current problems cannot be found.

There is much to think about in this book and some of the questions it raises may lead to some initial discomfort. In a world where resources are scarce, will democratic institutions survive in their present form? Can we sustain our present habitation patterns? How much do we have to change our comfortable lifestyle? These and other questions raised in the text are the first steps to finding the answers that will give us a more real and sustainable existence.
