Give The Gift Of Community This Holiday Season
By Laird Schaub, FIC Executive Secretary
This past weekend both of my adult children were home for Thanksgiving, marking the first time in three years that we've all been together at Sandhill Farm, the community where we all grew up--where they were born and raised, and where I learned how to live cooperatively.
I had the chance to reflect on how valuable it's been to both me and my children that I was able to raise them in a cooperative culture. Today, in this season of light and hope, I invite you to reflect on the importance of community. This year, consider giving friends and loved ones the gift of community.
Your thoughtfulness will help both the people close to you and the FIC, who depends on your support to help keep the light of cooperation shining brightly in a troubled world.
Here are four of our brightest stars to choose from:
Communities Magazine
Our 80-page quarterly regularly delivers the information and inspiration of Life in Cooperative Culture. Nobody covers the protean world of community living as comprehensively as we do. We take you inside to the joys and heartaches of people on the ground figuring out how to live productively and sustainably. A one-year subscription costs $24.
Communities Directory
Our current edition (2007) has 432 pages jam packed with over 1000 listings of intentional communities around the world. This is he bible for anyone seriously considering options in community living. We tell who's doing what and how to contact them. We give you maps, and an incredibly rich cross-reference chart that sorts groups by the most commonly asked questions. A copy of Communities Directory costs $24 plus shipping.
Visions of Utopia Video This two-volume DVD set offers an unprecedented representative sampling of intentional communities today. In Part One (released in 2002), videographer Geoph Kozeny offers an historical overview, plus profiles of seven contemporary groups. In Part Two (released last April), there are profiles of 10 additional groups. You get to see the communities and hear their stories told in the members' own voices. Part One
& Part Two cost $30 plus shipping each, or you can purchase the pair for $50 plus shipping.

FIC Membership
In addition to our publications, you can support the FIC by becoming a member (or renewing an existing membership). This makes a big difference in balancing our bottom line, and members get discounts on all FIC products, copies of our print Newsletter, invitations to our semi-annual organizational meetings, and advance notice on everything we do. By becoming a member, you become part of the Fellowship team. A one-year individual membership costs $30.

Thanks for taking a moment in your busy schedule to consider how FIC can be part of a new holiday tradition, where December is the month for community. Together, we can make a difference.
