Harrisonburg Cohousing

(Harrisonburg, Virginia, United States)

Mission Statement:

Our vision is to form a community of neighbors interested in knowing each other on a deeper level than typical American neighborhoods. We value our privacy, but recognize that our western culture and lifestyle isolate us from each other and make it challenging to build meaningful long-term relationships with those around us. In building this neighborhood, we want to recapture aspects of a traditional village: knowing each other’s names, eating some meals together, sharing and celebrating life together with planned and spontaneous gatherings. In addition, our group strives to live more simply and more lightly on the earth.

Additional Comments

Harrisonburg is a small city with a thriving community! The city population approaches 50,000, and the city is surrounded by farms giving way to forests. We have two universities and a community college, a strong farmers market, a children’s museum, grocery co-op, well-stocked library system, and many varied restaurants (including Indian, Carribean, Ethiopian, German, Thai, Japanese, Chinese, Mexican, Italian, Greek, and Turkish). Harrisonburg has a diverse population, with over 40 languages natively spoken by public school students. Our community will be located within the Harrisonburg city limits, yet remain fairly private and green.
