Mission Statement:

Due to strict zoning requirements in the County, more focus will be placed on community rather than proximity of homes to each other. There will be few restrictions on homes built, allowing members to pick the style and cost of their own homes. Also, we seek a community based on the importance of democratic principles rather that the dominance of a few key members. Promoting independence of thought will prevail over enforcing community restrictions.

Another important element will be to involve those outside the membership of the cohousing community itself. This will be accomplished by building a Community Center that allows those outside the cohousing community to be owners/participants.

Community Description:

This cohousing community plans to build 30-40 homes and a Community Center. Each single family home will be constructed on 3 acres of land in a rural setting with mountain views near the historic town of Bedford, VA and the Peaks of Otter on the Blue Ridge Parkway.

The emphasis will be more on actual community rather than a rigid set of rules governing homes, organization, work sharing, etc. This is based on our previous experience with a strict cohousing community that failed due to the dominance of a few key individuals who would not be flexible with the rest of the members.

To encourage interaction with the current residents of Bedford County, the Community Center will not be limited to members of the cohousing community.
